a few words about the mix... the title - "RetroFuturism" - originates from a moment during WMC this year, in which our dear friend Tony (a.k.a. glass) used the term to describe the kids with anime hair that we were making fun of while standing in a very long line outside Pawn Shop, waiting to get in. i thought it was hilarious, and it has proven to be a very diverse term, so now i'm stealing it for my mix. thanks Tony, this one is dedicated to you!
i hope you all enjoy. as always, comments and reviews are appreciated, whether good or bad.
Oh wow, d/l now. Nice lookin tracklist.

btw, for anyone who downloaded this today, you might want to delete it and re-download it. i went back and edited it so that there's 4 less minutes of the Prydz Remix, because it really was just too long and i felt it kind of disrupted the flow of the set.
the new link is in the original post.
loooooooooool at the edit

My notes on this set, just in case anyone feels like reading a novel:
| quote: |
Retro Futurism notes: Sagittaire - 1982 (Original Mix): Sick opener, sets the pace for the set... Doesn't really go anywhere in particular, but that's PERFECT for an opener, plus you didn't let it play too long... It works realy well. First mix: Unbelievable. It's like getting kicked in the pants to know you did this on Mixmeister, if you could pull it off live, you'd be a goddess among DJ's... It really is an amazing mix. Roman Rai - Asio (Original Mix): Solid bassline, really does a good job of picking up the pace and chugging along without being too abrasive for a second tune. I really, really like the placement of this tune. The only criticism I have is that the breakdown in it may be too long for the second tune... Once you learn a bit more about editing, you'll be able to eliminate these kinds of issues. I really like the outro to this tune though... Solid. Second Mix: Perfectly phrased and properly EQ'd... I can tell already that you're going to embarrass me with this mix. Unbelievably solid mixing so far. Stan Kolev - Flashback (Sidechain Mix): OMG THAT FUCKING BASSLINE IS KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have fallen in love... officially... =) This tune is definitely "3rd Track" material. Brings the pace back a touch, and lets you lay back and just kind of enjoy the proggy melody. I really, really, really dig this tune. I gotta go home and spin some records now, ZOMG! The only other note on this tune is that maybe it plays out for too long... But that's again, something that can be easily remedied. Third Mix: Very "chuggy" mixing, you can tell when you're mixing out, but that's not a bad thing. The high percs from "Play Guru" are really prominent, so you can tell when they pop in, the only other note I'd have about this is that I think with the options you have in front of you in Mixmeister, the EQ'ing and volume mixing is exceptionally tight. The mix is meaningful and not at all boring... Really, really well done. The biggest problem with my live set is that I struggled with some of the beatmatching, and so some of the mixes just go on for too long. When the "break" in Play Guru drops, it's right on time. Can Costa - Play Guru (Original Mix): Great bouncy tune... Another one we're going to fight over Definitely picks up the pace of the mix again, which is solid, got my head bobbin' in the coffeeshop, definitely rock soiid, and very interested to see what you come up with for the mix into "Monkeybreak." "Flashback" is probably the high point for the set so far. OMG THE BREAK @ 23:19 IS OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm officially obsessed.Fourth Mix: The mix is fine, beatmatched well and phrased right, but I'm not so sure I like "Monkeybreak." Nils Noa - Monkeybreak: I'm 50/50 on this one to start off with... We'll see what happens... So far it's just too dark/progged out for this set I think... But maybe it works, might just be personal preference. Towards the end, it's official, I'm not a fan of this tune, at least in this set right now on the first listen. Fifth Mix: Sickness. Makes up for me not caring for the Nils Noa tune just in how sick it is, nice long, lush, harmonically bomb sounding mix. This is another one that people are going to go "OMG" over... You NEED TO PRACTICE MORE ON REAL DECKS SO YOU CAN DO THIS ALL THE TIME!!!! The ideas that come out of your head are unreal... Well played kiddo! My god, when 1983 finally drops all the way in... DANCEFLOOR KILLA! Paolo Mojo - 1983 (Eric Prdyz Remix / Clovis Edit): We all know how I feel about this tune, no explanation needed. Dropped proper as hell, that's how you're supposed to mix. My god does this need an edit though... Faaaaarrrr too long. It still works, it just plays for a long, long, long time... People who don't care for this tune may be turned off, but the mixing into it is good enough to snag some serious props from people who maybe weren't even fans before this. Sixth MIx: I'm so angry with you at this point for how solid the mixing is in this... It makes me wanna take down basically every set that I have posted anywhere and just give up. The mixing in this set is absolutely unreal. The day you can pull all of this off on real decks is the day that almost every house DJ in the world needs to look out, because honestly, what you come up with for mixes is just shocking some times. Sebastien Leger feat Gia Melish - Hypnotized (Chris Lake Vocal Mix): I like the original mix better. It's a good tune, and surprisingly the vocals don't bother me at all, but the very Chris Lake sounding "farty" bassline kinda kills me... I still think it's well placed, it' s just another tune I probably would have done something different with. This is going to be great for the kinds of kids who are really into this shit right now, it just isn't me at the moment. Seventh Mix: This is the only mix in the whole set so far that I think comes in a bit abrasively. It's just very apparent when everything is mixing in, which isn't really a problem because on a loud system, it would basically just sound like you were cranking it up a bit to get people going. Still a very solid mix that you shouldn't feel at all sketchy about. Kaskade - In This Life (Cabin Crew Instrumental Mix): Pure filth. I love it. Makes me wanna drop this tune yet again... I just wanna play all the music you have right now... ![]() Eighth Mix: Wow... absolutely gorgeous mixing here.. reminds me of when Dekay was great, the layering of ambient sounds is just great, and when the bassline kicks over to "Promised Land" it just sounds like that's the way that mix is supposed to be. I don't know if I could listen to either of these tracks again without expecting that mix to happen, which is probably one of the highest compliments I could pay someone! Hoxton Whores vs Rob Tissera - Promised Land (God Damn Fuck You Mix): Really diggin' the bassline in this one, and the kind of trancey synths that come in around 50:30 definitely fit the vibe of the set. Really, really, really well done here. The mix in/programming are exactly what they should be. The breakdown in this track is absolutely perfect and well placed. It's kind of what I tried to do with "Lonely Child" at the end of the OMGWTFBBQ set, a nice long breakdown to kind of signify that things are coming to an end soon, but not before you have a few final words with the audience. This is a tune I love, but we won't fight over it, as it wouldn't work at all with anything I'm playing at the moment, but god damn did you hook me with it. Ninth Mix: Perfectly phrased... If anything, this set definitely shows that you know how to drop a bassline proper. ![]() Phantom Project - Summertime (Instrumental Mix): HOLY SHIT! This track is mine now... You got to put it in a set... Now it belongs to me! Absolutely PERFECT placement, it's soooooooo fucking great. I love everything about this track... How you mixed it, how it fits in the set, everything about it just screams "LOVE ME RJT!" I'm not even to the last track and I can tell you already that this is going to be the set that gets hammered by me for weeks to come. Unfucking believable.Tenth Mix: Another pefectly phrased mix. Your mixing in this set is sex. Plain and simple. Sonique - Tonight (Haji & Emanuel Instrumental Mix): A nice little bouncy Haji & Emanuel mix to send me off on. Really digging the way you end this one. The piano line that drops at 61:00 is tight as hell, and tells me straight up "Good night, and good luck Ladies & Gentlemen. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here!" Summary: All in all this is the best set you've ever put together. Regardless of it being Mixmeistered, it took some serious talent to put this together. The programming is spot on, and the only low points for me are Monkeybreak and Hypnotized, but even those aren't bad, it's a personal preference issue. You really did some outstanding work here, and I'm going to be humbled when the thread for this gets about 80000000000000092109421 replies and I can't even get anyone to review my live set (As it's really not that good). Ace work darling... You did an amazing job here and now I just wanna go work on music all day to try and see if I'm even capable of doing anything better than this. So fucking well done... God damn. |
