China to build world's tallest tower

BEIJING, (AFP) - The southern Chinese boomtown of Guangzhou plans to put itself in the record books by building the tallest tower in the world, with work set to begin next month, officials involved in the project said.

The Guangzhou TV Tower, which is expected to soar between 580-600 metres (1,914-1,980 feet) above ground, would surpass the current record holder, the 553-metre CN Tower in Toronto, built in 1976.

Located on the banks of the Pearl River, the new TV tower will occupy 84,880 square metres in the city's premier business district of Tianhe.

Thirteen domestic and overseas companies have been bidding for the right to design the landmark structure in Guangdong province with the shortlist now down to three.

Huang Jiatian, deputy director at the Headquarters for the Construction of the Guangzhou New TV Tower, said the companies were ARUP Qualification of Britain, Architecture Studio of France and Leon Wohl Hage Wernik of Germany.

"We haven't decided on the design of the tower yet so the project may be delayed a bit but we expect the project to be open to tourists by 2008," he told AFP.

"The TV tower will be a symbol of Guangzhou, a tourist attraction combining cultural and entertainment facilities," said Huang.

The reason for the height was primarily related to the television transmitter, he added.

An official surnamed Luo from the Construction Committee of Guangzhou said around 200 families would have to be moved to make way for the project.

"Relocation work has already begun and the building work will begin at the beginning of December," he told AFP.

According to the China Daily, the project will cost more than 1.5 billion yuan (180 million dollars).

The tower will include sky gardens, bars and other tourist facilities and be illuminated at night.

Guangzhou's old TV Tower will be demolished with the Guangdong provincial TV stations moving into the new building.

"It will help further raise Guangzhou's standing at home and abroad and help promote the city's tourism in the years to come," Chen Wangqiang, from the Guangzhou Association of Architecture, told China Daily.

TV towers have often become architectural symbols and tourist attractions in many cities around the world, including one in another Chinese city, Shanghai.

The tallest man-made structures are in North Dakota:

629 m KVLY-TV mast
The KVLY-TV mast (formerly the KTHI-TV mast) is a television transmitting tower in North Dakota, and at 2063' (628m) it is the tallest man-made land-based structure in the world.

628 m KXJB-TV mast
The KXJB-TV mast is a television transmitting tower in North Dakota, and at 2060' (627m) it is the second-tallest artificial structure in the world, shorter by 3 ft (1 m) than the KVLY-TV mast which stands a few miles away.

so are these considered free standing structures ? or are they supported by harnesses ?

if so then someone should tell the tourism board to stop providing misinformation !

Radio Masts vs. the CN tower... laughable!

Anyhow, it's a testament to the CN tower that it took almost 30 years to break the record... (although the China tower hasn't been completed yet)

Or even started yet......

Wasn't there a radio tower (tallest in the world)in Russia that collapsed a while ago?

Collapsed is the key word. North Dakota wins now.

647m Warszawa radio mast
The Warsaw radio mast was the tallest structure ever built. However it only existed from 1974 to 1991.

Burg Dubai (Dubai Tower) in Dubai will be the tallest tower in the near future.

http://www.burjdubai.com

Ironically, the Saudi Bin Laden Group is one of the contractor's selected from amongst a group of international companies to build the Dubai Tower

Dubai is also planning to have the largest mall in the world (See the first link)
Dubai has already the tallest hotel in the world.

Not bad for a tiny Emirate.

Tiny in size, huge in wealth.

I'd check into whether or not the North Dakota towers are "free standing" though.

CN Tower's claim to fame has always been that it is the tallest man-made, free standing structure in the world.

It didn't collapse they've had a fire there but it didn't collapse...but I don't think it was taller than the CN tower anyway...

Oi! North Datkota has the tallest man made structure.

You can add on all sorts of qualifiers - point still is, nothing man made goes taller.
