Ow that's pretty bad, on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it an 8!

At least I can use my middle name as a first name, so it doesn't sound like mum was tripping on analgesics when she thought it was a good idea. Sort of helps when creating a first impression that your parents where not rampaging drug fiends.

Yeah, it seemed like there were at least two Jennifers in every class when I was going to school.

Of course, it was much the same experience for me: at one point I even played on a soccer team where three other guys had the same name as I did, lol. My parents certainly weren't bucking the trends. But my first name is my dad's middle name, so maybe it was that rather than just the popularity.

I went to school with a kid called Brain. We thought he was a bit of a show off, but it turned out his parents were dyslexic.

Can't you just pull a Lira or an Acton and introduce yourself by your family name?

I mean, my first name is not exactly uncommon... Marcus Vinicius is just a tad bit long

There is an annual topic at a national radio show over here. Two DJ's made it up, it's called "Schaamnaam", "Shame name" and it's really funny. They look for the most funny names of people. Here are some:

Lira, see how far your Dutch brings you

Bennie Thuis _____________ "I'm not home" when "translated".
2008: Stanley Messie ______ "Stanley knife" when "translated" "messie" like a tiny knife
2009: Fokje Modder _______ "Fuck y'r mother" when "translated", Actually "modder" is dirt in Dutch
2010: Con Domen _________ obvious -en = -s "translated"
2012: Hendy Keppy _______ "handicap (py)" like "tiny handicap".

Also one of my favorites: Justin Kees "Just in case"

The "Bennie Thuis" one took me a while, hehe.

Yeah, that's a really nice one "Ben niet thuis"

Do other languages also have such funny combinations especially after being "translated" to another language like English here?

Posted by Lira on Oct-26-2013 20:07:

And now for the boys:

There's less variability here... but it's quite telling that for a number of years the most common name in Texas was - wait for it - Jose!

Posted by on Oct-27-2013 00:02:

I was going to ask you if you have one of Brazil but I assume everywhere south of Texas goes from Miguel to Jose.

I was going to correct you because I've met just a few Josés in my life time, but turns out you're half right

Most common boy names in Brazil (2013):

  1. José
  2. Antônio
  3. João
  4. Francisco
  5. Luiz
  6. Paulo
  7. Carlos
  8. Manoel
  9. Pedro
  10. Marcos
  11. Raimundo
  12. Sebastião
  13. Marcelo
  14. Jorge
  15. Geraldo
  16. Luís
  17. Fernando
  18. Fábio
  19. Roberto
  20. André

No Miguéis on the list though

But, for the love of God, don't ever call a Brazilian José by the Spanish pronunciation. He's likely to feel insulted by "Hoe-say", so just say "Zhoo-ze(p)" (you're not supposed to pronounce the "p", but pretend there is just so you get the vowel right).

Your own accent got it closer. It's "ZHOR-zhee" (can't really spell it in English, but it's the same "o" as in "hot" for you). Say it in English, as you normally would, and we'll just assume it's the correct pronunciation with a thick accent

Consonants in Portuguese sound closer to their English counterparts than you'd expect from the proximity to Spanish.

(I will read the names for you both when I get home)

I don't know if you knew this but Brazil is a big country (almost as large as the USA).

So is Jesus (gees-us) or (hay-zeus)?

Lira reading the 20 most common names + Jesus in Portuguese

There you go
