Damn, he got you.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jun-30-2013 01:05:

Yeah.

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 01:10:

Fucking Twitter. People post their ENTIRE lives on it.

Case in point.

I'm at my family's house for the weekend.

I'm drinking beers on the porch, and I know my lil sis went for a run.

I'm skimming through Twitter and she posts, "OK bye, getting into the shower now."

I'm like, "Oh fuck, I gotta take a huge piss."

I run toward the bathroom and literally beat her by a step lol

Mission accomplished. Thanks Twitter. I'd be holding it in otherwise, right now.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jun-30-2013 01:15:

I find that aspect of social media so fucking ridiculous. Like, every time someone checks in some place, or takes a selfie, or whatever...they consciously have to say to themselves "I must upload this to Facebook/Twitter/Instagram!" I accidentally hit the check in button when I was farting around on my phone one time and thought about the effort required to do it purposefully, and how actually fucking stupid it is.

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 01:18:

Totally stupid. That's why I hate social media.

People wanna be famous.

This is their way to make them feel like they have a voice, even if it's means talking about or mentioning the most senseless shit.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jun-30-2013 01:24:

I mean, obviously I am guilty of doing some of that stuff too - but godamn, not to the extent that so many other people do. Validation book imo.

Why not go by yourself? Or is that a faux pas for you?

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jun-30-2013 03:03:

Not a faux pas at all. But am tired myself and was hoping he would want to go and thus motivate me to be less tired.

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 04:14:

Does anyone else have 1, 2, 3 second fits of, "Fuck, I won't be here one day, I'll be dead and gone?"

Posted by srussell0018 on Jun-30-2013 04:16:

Ever since I stopped believing in heaven.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jun-30-2013 04:16:

Yeah, man. Free-floating anxiety. It never gets better, but maybe you do.

Is that what it's clinically called?

I've had this feeling since I was like 10/11. Sporadic moments, 1-3 second fits, of "oh shit, I'll be gone one day."

Then I forget about it and proceed. And it only happened a few times/year. If that.

Since everyone thinks of death, I was wondering if everyone thinks of it this way.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jun-30-2013 04:41:

Far be it from me to diagnose what you're going through. It's serious to your character, but never as serious as you think. Consider it a quarter-life crisis, and find your way.

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 04:42:

Lol.

You're next.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jun-30-2013 04:44:

oOooOooOoooooOooo

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 04:46:

Seriously though, you never contemplated death for split seconds, Hal?

Wow compiler/language design is probably the most fun thing I have done in a long time. It fills all the little niches of programming that I like. It's a constant challenge, the implementation is the challenge, and the expansive parts are not boring. Plus its a useful tool that will get used and feedback and hopefully contributions, so you get a sense of community in the actual coding.

Its coding for coders, which is always nice (writing libraries gives me the same sort of satisfaction, but its less implementation than a compiler).

:P I wish I could skip doing all the shitty boring I already know how to do it work of undergrad CS work and just get into post-grad stuff. :@

What's your major? When are you planning to graduate?

Posted by Lews on Jun-30-2013 09:28:

Definitely get those odd moments of panic about dying, but thankfully not too frequently.

I'm in an odd place, though, in that while I don't want to not exist, I also think living forever sounds awful.

Dammit, though, why'd you need to post about this?

Posted by srussell0018 on Jun-30-2013 15:00:

I've been plagued by those thoughts for awhile. From talking to my grandparents and older people, it helps to realize that when you've lived 70, 80 years or so, you're just so tired that the thought of death isn't nearly as scary. It's where I think the term rest in peace is appropriate. As much as we have no idea what happens when you die, death is an end to an extremely long and arduous path through life.

Don't have a major planned out yet, and it'd probably be Winter 2015 when I graduate.

Honestly it seems stupid to keep going to school for CS stuff. I look at every single high level CS class and its either something you will NEVER use in the real world and I already know how to do it (or could figure it out in a week or two) or its so simple that I already know it.

At least in graduate level courses you get into stuff thats so abstract that its purely useful on a research level... Compiler design is senior level under-grad/graduate school work though, and well I just decided to pick it up and start learning it and I've got pretty much the basics down in 2 months of working on my own.

My class starts on Tuesday and the teacher hasn't posted anything. Wtf. I hate not being able to read ahead. I had a nightmare last night that I missed the first few classes and showed up finally on a test day, that I obviously wasn't prepared for. Ughhh.

Aren't you like 40? What the hell are you still doing at school?

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jun-30-2013 17:16:

Lol, I'm 32. Continuing education is a requirement of the college of nurses in order to keep practice current. I can't ever see myself NOT doing courses/school. Even if I was 40 why does it matter? Have you got something against people educating themselves? Only a stupid person thinks learning ends at a certain point.

Anyhow, I'm working towards my critical care certificate...I work in a surgical ICU. Just something to help further my career and also fill the time while I pay off my debt.

Posted by OrangestO on Jun-30-2013 17:41:

My dad went back to school in his 40s to finish his undergrad.

I can't imagine how hard that was for him, considering his age.

Now he has a PhD.

Point is, it's never too late. And you should never stop educating yourself, whether that's in a classroom or elsewhere.

Isn't that, like, common sense? Lol.

Anyways, looking forward to watching the Brazil/Spain Confederations Cup Final this afternoon. Best two teams in the world. Should be a good match. Go Brazil!

(they could use some positivity, right now)
