Is this ok without vocals?

Posted by Constantin on Sep-27-2015 19:47:

It's ok w/o vocal, buuuuuuut a lill' vocal fx, sth like a female choir "aaah" with a little bit of stutter on the tail could add to the dreamy feeling of the track ^^.

Just my opinion. Honestly Richard, I don't think it needs vox at all

just a quick listen on my laptop here, like the melodies they stand out nicely, its kinda like that Anjunadeep stuff, definitely not deep house

Posted by Storyteller on Sep-28-2015 12:42:

I like it but the whole mix sounds kind of boxy. Like there is a small room reverb put over the top of the mix (in particlar the rythmix section). The bassline is a bit to prominent sometimes, just putting it a few dB down should fix that. Other than it was a nice listen .

I noticed the bass was a bit loud when I listened again this morning. This boxy sound you've mentioned before, I think it's because I add a room reverb to parts of the drums, dunno for me it just feels a bit more alive, but I take your feedback seriously so will have a another listen.

OR it might be the Cubase vintage compressor across the master that is making it boxy. I'll have a fiddle.

I also noticed some of the leeds are playing over one another a bit to much here n there so will strip some back.

Thanks for listening you guys.

BTW - I'm making my first ever hip hop track with a rap done by some bloke, has anyone here made any hop?

Yep. Matter of fact, this was my first attempt a month ago.

Listening properly now - i love the bassline, really catchy

unfortunately cos of all the stuff you add its getting a bit lost after the first break
its better after the second break as the sounds you bring in are more out of the way

I would get the mid of that bassline up a bit more into the mix and make it the focal point

you seem to have a tendancy to keep adding stuff, what that results in is frequency overlapping - the brain can only concentrate on so many things at any one time

also id bring up the clap, at the moment is too far back relative to the hats and the reverb makes it sound even further away

Ah I already made changes before reading your feedback Evo.

Added an Anjuna style vocal etc
Tried already reducing some elements

I quietened the mid bass in response to Storytellers comment.

Let me know where there are too many things going on and I will address

And I wonder now if to increase bass again?
I quietened the knocky kik

Darek thanks for the feed, hopefully the latest incarnation is smoother
Cheers

Hey that's pretty good, like that drone type sound you use throughout

Mine is early days, lot to learn about this genre. I ride his vocal with a pitch shifter here n there. Bit weird.

Kik not heavy enough I think.

Posted by SystematicX1 on Sep-28-2015 20:35:

LOL That is cool as fuck Richard...
I usually judge tracks like this by how much "head bob" I do, I did alot on this..lol
Good "crunk" style there. Can't wait to hear the progress!

Posted by TranceLover007 on Sep-28-2015 22:21:

Sounds good but are you compressing this a bit too much? (at least in some parts) and some parts of drums are a bit to loud (for my taste Richard) - overall sounds really cool

Darek

Lol, you must have hell of the time with this vocal lol - still is off in few places but overall concept is interesting man, one of few worth of finishing over here.

Started working on this one the past hour or so and feeling fairly good about it. Lots of placeholders but confident in the prominent tones.
I think I may finally have my next original track which I havent done in a long time.

Funny how opinions on mixing mixing technicalities can be opposite.

I'll try and give my 2 cents to all tracks on the previous page later today

Hi Richard,

I feel the mix has improved quite a bit! I experience less of the boxiness which I described earlier. That alone feels like a great improvement already. I do feel like it is still present though, especially on the kick. Is there still some reverb on the kick? Or is it just an acoustic type of kickdrum. Those sometimes have these type of tails when not dampened. I would recommend against changing the kick as it sits in the mix pretty darn well, but there is just something in it's tail that annoys me .

I'm guessing there is space to increase the bass. I really like where it's sitting now personally. If the volume is put up a bit again I'd suggest just compressing the part where the bass (and saturation as it sounds like) goes up so that it doesn't cut through the mix too hard. I feel like this is almost the opposite of what evo8 is saying but that is how I feel .

Also some attention to the compression on the overall mix might be beneficial. Sometimes the beats seem to be pushed away for short amounts of time making the overal mix sound a tad nervous. If possible try and get away with milder compression and opt for mild sidechaining here and there, possibly automate drums to lower in volume on some parts to give a bit more space to the instruments.

Which is basically hiphop with a lot of electronic synthwork which back in the days were only used in electronic music. This isn't quite that, a lot more hardcore (newschool-ish) hiphop probably, for as far as I know of genre (which is next to nothing). Anyway, this is badass. I can't tell if the bass goes deep enough but I'm pretty sure at loud volume it will pound like mad. I'm feeling it. Nice tiny sfx in there and very entertaining to the ear. Well done, don't make it too long though I'm guessing that is the only possible pitfall on this . Unless you freak out like mad later on.

The drums don't do it for me, but I have to admit they fit into the overall picture quite well. The chorus is nice, I like the minimal approach but maybe some extra synth layers on top of the pads will give it more emphasis as now it is more off the same but only marginally different.

This has a lot of potential and could be really excellent track if is properly finished -> you will need to work on your field of depth for some of your instruments and in overall track + additional improvement in your dynamics level should be consider.

Cheer,

Darek

yeah on Richards track i think the bass is spot on now, not sure why i thought it needed to be louder first time, maybe some other stuff in the mix was crowded in first time!

Here is more develop version of previously posted track (vocal) as some people where interesting about future direction for this production.

At the moment I'm waiting for official vocal recording for this track but as place holder in structure creation process I used some different vocal steams (from Amy) lol, have fun guys:

Cheers,

Darek

Real nice sounds there Darek, very upbeat.
Curious about the piano and I guess I am one to give more "depth" to a piano tone but, I am wondering if the piano around 1:40 couldn't have a little verb on them to make them float more thus adding that little atmospheric touch to the backend of that verse as well.
And yea, this screams for vox...can't wait to hear it when it does.
