2009.06.05. Destiny & Activate pres. 'A Night at The Big House' @ THE DON JAIL

Dear Big House ticket holders,

It is with a heavy heart that we are writing this letter to you. As of 10am on Thursday, June 04, 2009 the Ontario Realty Corporation, an arm of the provincial government and the agency that controls the Old Don Jail has canceled our event on Friday, June 5, 2009 and ALL other events for the Old Don Jail in the near future. To say that we are devastated is an understatement. Many people, including the promoters, artists and agency that refurbished the Old Don Jail for events over the past 3 months have dedicated thousands of hours to creating a truly amazing and memorable event. In the combined 20+ years and 1000’s of parties organized and promoted by those involved, this is the FIRST event in our history that has been completely canceled.

We want to assure all of you that we, along with Bridgeport Health and the company refurbishing the venue are working with our legal teams to come up with a solution to satisfy the province and allow events in the future. It is our opinion that our legal efforts will be rewarded sometime soon and we will obtain a new date. With that in mind we encourage you to hold onto your tickets for at least two weeks as we work through the process. As many of you know, this event sold out in a matter of days and we would obviously want those that supported us from the start to have the opportunity to attend the make-up date. That said, we want to make sure that you all know that your hard earned ticket money is safe. We completely understand that some of you may want to obtain refunds on your tickets immediately and have instructed the ticket outlets to offer those refunds as of tomorrow (June 5). Please note that you must return your ticket to the store you purchased it from as the stores can only refund tickets numbered for their respective locations.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for this turn of events and will keep you updated as to the progress of the case.

Sincerely,

Ryan, Jesse, Evan and Josh.

::ABOUT THE OLD DON::

Designed by architect William Thomas (who also designed St. Michael's Cathedral and St. Lawrence Hall), the building is one of the architectural treasures of Toronto and one of the few pre-Confederation structures that remains intact in the city.

Construction of the jail was almost completed when, in 1862, a disastrous fire necessitated its rebuilding. The building was reconstructed to the architect's original plans and it was first occupied in January 1864.

When it opened it was called the "Palace for Prisoners." At that time it represented a tremendous advance in the public attitude toward the treatment of law breakers. Until then, (as was then the world-wide custom) prisoners had been confined in appalling and inhumane conditions.

At the Don, prisoners were housed one-to-a-cell in a space only 36 inches wide, without plumbing or a bed. In later years, as many as three prisoners were housed in these tiny cells. Prisoners were not allowed to talk and only left their cells for one hour of exercise a day.

Before capital punishment was abolished in Canada, the Don was the site of 34 hangings. Starting with the execution of John Boyd in January 1908, hangings at the Don took place in an indoor chamber, which was a converted washroom, at the northeast corner of the old building.

Previously, condemned men had been hanged on an outdoor scaffold in the jail yard. The indoor facility was seen as an improvement because indoor executions were private (at the outdoor hanging of Fred Lee Rice in 1902, crowds had lined surrounding rooftops to see something of the spectacle) and because the condemned didn’t have to walk as far.

Among the Don Jail’s most notorious inmates were the famous Boyd Gang, who managed to escape from the prison twice. Their second escape gained even more notoriety as it was the lead story on the very first televised newscast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

On June 5th, 2009, history will once again be made! Destiny & Activate team up to unlock the doors of The Old Don. The 145 year old facility will be open to the public and converted to the ultimate cops & robbers party for the first time ever. Grab a ticket fast to be part of this legendary event.
