Cool Euphoria's Interview Thread (Updates: Funkerman, Daniel Wanrooy, Redroche, Kyau & Albert)

NEWEST INTERVIEWS WILL ALWAYS BE ON THE LAST PAGE!!

http://www.365mag.com/index.php?pg=...+Music+Magazine

365Mag recently caught up with DJ Tiesto on Friday September 25th in New York just prior to day two of his three day performance at Hammerstein Ballroom for the kick off for the Kaleidoscope World Tour to promote his latest album.

The Kaleidoscope album is set for official release on October 6th, 2009 on Ultra Records, and it contains seventeen original Tiesto tracks featuring a number of collaborations with artists of various styles and genres including Calvin Harris, Sara & Tegan, Cary Brothers, Nelly Furtado, and more.

He speaks of a new direction for his music and his reasoning behind it, as well as some of his goals for the future. Is the world ready for the new Tiesto and his diverse selections. Let's find out...

How are you doing today
Good, thanks.

How did your gig at Hammerstein go last night?
It was good, it was the opening of the World Tour.

Are you excited for tonight?
Yeah, tonight is going to be even better I think.

I hope so, I am going to be there.
Oh yeah? Nice.

Is this the career you envisioned for yourself when you were younger?
No, I dreamt about it, but I never expected to become so big all over the world.

What did you initially want to do?
I just wanted to work in the music business, no matter what. Like be a tour manager or work for a record company. I love music.

How do you feel about the current styles of Trance music that are being released?
I got a little bored of it to be honest. I think this summer has been a big change for me, in a way that I am not scared anymore to play anything else. I adjust from every style at the moment. I play a couple of House records, Techno, and some Trance records still, Pop mixes and Indie. I'm all over the place at the moment.

What style of music do you particularly favor at the moment?
I like a lot of House records, but it's more of an eclectic thing I think. A bit of everything. I can play a Calvin Harris record, The Editors, a House record, a big Trance track from Marcel Woods.

Is that the same reason you are trying to do something different with the album now?
That's how it started, with the album I started to notice artists and they were so creative and so open minded to everything. I felt like I should look into other artist too, and I love Trance music but I just felt like it all sounds the same. It gets boring after a while.

I can agree with that...
When you take time out from being a DJ, which DJ's do you respect and tune into?

I get along with a lot of DJ's. I like the House DJ's a lot. The Swedish House Mafia is one of my favorites. I love those guys, and I bumped into them a couple of times. They are always friendly and down to Earth. David Guetta is good guy too, I like him a lot.

With the latest advancements in technology many DJ's have turned away from hardware and are using laptops. Have you ever tried this and do you anticipate you will ever convert to using this technology?
Well I do on a production level. I am very into Abelton at the moment. As a DJ I think in the future you can't avoid it but for now I still love my CD's. I feel almost like it's vinyl a little bit. I'm old skool when it comes to DJing. I like to mix, not with a laptop.

In the past, you played a solo gig at Mansion where you performed from opening to closing. Is there any chance the U.S. may see another of these marathon sets?
I'll do marathons in New York, I mean five hours every night is pretty big nowadays.

We want more Tiesto!!
Haha, even more?

Yes, EVEN MORE!
Well, I have to give the opening DJ a chance as well. The Hammerstein Ballroom is pretty much solo. I mean, they open up at ten or nine and I go on at eleven.

Ok, I am glad to hear that.
I'm on from 11-4 and tomorrow from 10-3.

Of all of the places you could have began your Kaleidoscope tour, why did you select New York?
Well I wanted to start in America because the last time I started my tour in Europe. I switched it up. I love America. I love to play here; I love to be here. New York is a great city to open the show. Everybody is here, it's a very international city. Exposure wise it's amazing.

In what ways has your life changed since you became married?
I never got married.

Really, I thought you were married?
No.

So, Tiesto is still single?
Yeah, I've gone back to being single. I was supposed to get married and everything got canceled.

Ok, I will leave that one alone then...
Cut! (jokingly signals cut hand gesture) haha

Have you ever considered releasing any 2009/2010 renditions of any of your classics?
Yeah, I am thinking about it. May be next year. Black Hole Recordings wants to release an album with all the big tunes from Tiesto on there and I might sneak in a couple of remixes of some oldies.

Will Magikal Circus ever be released?
I hope so.

A lot of people are waiting on that one, it's a good track.
It's released on the DVD but it's never been released as a single. I think it's time to write to Black Hole Recordings and tell them to release it.

I think that's a good idea.

Are you currently working on any collaboration with other artists or vocalists?
Yeah, at the moment I feel like the whole production thing is so innovative at the moment. My new work style; I am continuously working on new projects. You are pretty much up to date so you know all about the Three 6 Mafia track, and Dizzee Rascal. I'm actually working on a Muse remix. I got some others...

You got some tricks up your sleeve?
Yeah, I've got plenty of stuff.

Can you mention any upcoming artists that you may have scheduled for the fifteen minutes of fame on your radio show Club Life?
No, we do it by week. Every week we decide. Everybody is welcome to send in fifteen minutes. We already have a bunch of big name producers on it but I'd like to have somebody from a bedroom in New York or Paris.

Where would someone send that in?
On Tiesto.com you can find the info.

I'll send you one, how about that?
I'd like that. Do you have one with you now?

No, I don't have one with me at the moment.
Send it to Ben, he is my assistant. He selects the fifteen minutes of fame.

What are some of your goals for the rest of this year?
Surviving!

Thats a good one.
Well my goals are to promote the album and to get people excited about it. It's a very controversial album. I think it's a whole new Tiesto out there, and everybody is shocked. A lot of people like it, a lot of people don't. It's nice to see how it develops, but I think at the end it's going to be all positive. People have to get used to it. I think it's a good thing.

Well, that pretty much wraps it up. Thank you.

365Mag would like to thank DJ Tiesto for his time and answers!

Smiley DJ Interview with Robbie Rivera

http://www.365mag.com/index.php?pg=...+Music+Magazine

365MAG INTERVIEW: ROBBIE RIVERA

Special: 365 Special Feature (2010-03-08)

Prolific House producer Robbie Rivera was born in Puerto Rico and has since migrated to the United States with residences in Miami as well as the Balearic island of Ibiza.

His self taught DJing skills were only the beginning of his successful career in music. He has produced several chart topping tracks over the years. In 2007 he began broadcasting his own radio show on XM Radio entitled Juicy Radio. In 2009 he released his latest album Closer To the Sun on Ultra Records and conducted an extensive tour spanning all across the United States. Additionally he will be playing at the Winter Music Conference in Nikki Beach this year and is scheduled to have some Juicy Beach parties in the works as well. We reached out to Robbie for comment to find out some juicy details! (Pun intended)

What are some of the topics that come up frequently when someone is engaging in conversation with you?

They always talk to me about my music and which club I like best in the world. [laughs] That's a tough one, trying to pick just one club!

Describe some of your highlights in 2009.
Playing back-to-back with Tiësto in Ibiza was great. Releasing my full-length studio album, Closer To The Sun (Ultra/Black Hole), and chillin' in my pool in Ibiza.

Who was the first celebrity or fellow musician you have ever met? Was it an interesting encounter?
I met Jason Statham from the “Transporter” movies while deejaying in New Orleans. He is a crazy…and awesome dude!

Vocals vs. Instrumentals... Which do you personally feel is more appropriate for different situations?
Some clubs and fans prefer to hear more vocals, and some underground clubs prefer that I play more instrumental tracks. I play what I feel will work at that club and for my fans.

Have you ever been on such an extensive tour that you actually forgot what day it was?
Yes, all the time! This happens when I tour from Wednesday through Sunday in Europe, during the busy summer season.

Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for the Closer To The Sun tour?
I like to play mixes from all of the tracks on the album that nobody has but me.

Any word on whether you will be playing at the upcoming Electric Zoo Festival in New York again this year?
That's with my booking agents.

What is your favorite piece of equipment or technology, and why?
My Mac laptop! I can do a full track anywhere I want, watch a movie or surf the Internet. I can't live without it.

Do you have any other comments for the readers of 365Mag?
Come to Juicy Beach at Nikki Beach Club in Miami this WMC 2010, or catch any one of my Juicy Beach parties this summer in Las Vegas and beyond!

365Mag would like to thank Robbie Rivera for his time and answers.

Posted by osterzone on Mar-08-2010 21:19:

Cool questions.

As for the EZ one his response is as good as yes IMO.

Posted by Zack Roth on Mar-08-2010 21:52:

On a related note...Robbie Rivera surprised the hell out of me the last time I heard him live. I totally assumed he would play a very commercial set, and the guy just banged it out, dropping serious bombs. Almost no vocals.

Posted by EliPsE on Mar-09-2010 13:14:

Nice interview. I had the same feelings of Robbie until he owned EZ. I wouldn't mind seeing him again. The song that stood out for me during his set was The Killers – Spaceman (Sander Van Doorn Mix).

Posted by Scoops on Mar-09-2010 13:31:

Robbie is a great guy...very nice and humble

1st met him back at Surf Club in 2002 for his 1st area appearance and it was an amazing day at Surf. eventhough he played alot of his own productions, he still ripped it...

some of my fav Rivera tracks:

Hypnotize
Feel This
Sonique – Can't Make Up My Mind (Robbie Rivera rmx)

Smiley DJ Interview with BT

http://www.365mag.com/index.php?pg=...+Music+Magazine

Brian Transeau aka BT is an American producer, composer, singer and business owner. He has collaborated with artist in nearly every genre including pop, trance, house, and hip hop proving that his talents and skills in production are not limited to only electronic music.

He has released countless tracks and remixes and a total of six albums. His recent album 'These Hopeful Machines' was reviewed recently on 365Mag and has receive much praise claiming it could very well be one of 365Mag's top albums for 2010.

We gathered some inquiries in regards to his lifestyle both past and present mainly picking his brain on the topics of technology as well as his refined music genius.

As you were growing up, which musician did you look up to the most, and why?

I aspired to be, studied, and idolized more composers than musicians, so some of my favorite composers were people that I studied a considerable amount of their work if not their entire bodies of work are Debussy and Bartok. For musicians I would have to say Peter Hook (the bass player for New Order), and Martin Gore (the songwriter from Depeche Mode).

In your younger years were you the nerdy type, a bully, or something in between?

(Laughs) This is a very funny question; one that I've never been asked before, although I like it. I was definitely very sort of bright and introverted. I took a lot of solace in my own company. I started playing the piano when I was 4. I was practicing 6 hours a day by the time I was 6 years old so that doesn't leave a lot of time for socializing and playing. My life was pretty much consumed with academics and practice.

The snow has been a major factor in the cancellations of some of your recent gigs. How did you weather the storm?

It was actually really beautiful. We did a lot of sledding and drank a lot of hot chocolate. A wonderful time was had by all, but it was very inconvenient as far as travel. I love living in a place where there are seasons. I missed that a lot. Living three years in California I think that your body can acclimate to something like that but you always remember the smell and the feeling of the place that you were raised. For me having seasons is a really important part of my internal reset mechanism. It makes me feel creative and keeps me checked in.

Can you tell us what equipment is involved in a 'Laptop Symphony'?

Yes, I can. I use two laptops, a Macbook pro with 8GB of ram. Super pimped out Mac Book pro. I am starting to use a shuttle PC for live visuals. I use a bunch of USB controllers, some Korg nano's. I am now using an Akai APC40 to control both audio and visuals. God willing on a good day, and a bunch of proprietary software and plug-ins developed by my company Sonik Architects, and I use Ableton Live as a host.

How important do you believe it is to embrace new technology?

I'd say it really depends on what it is. That is such a broad question, and it's a good and thoughtful question too, but I am going to answer it from a compositional vantage point. It is very important for me compositionally to embrace new technology as it really informs and inspires me to push the boundaries of what's known in the kind of modern macular music. There are new methodologies and modalities of ways of perceiving and doing things, and new techniques, new ideas, and new technologies all the time. You really can do things that haven't been heard before. Literally on a daily basis there are things coming out so it really something I enjoy keeping abreast of and I find it very inspiring.

The Mac vs. PC wars have been a constant topic amongst the tech savvy. What do you personally feel are the benefits of owning a Mac?

I must say that I do use PC's as well so I am sort of computer agnostic or non-denominational. I don't know what the right word to say here is. (laughs) I love the Macintosh, I love the aesthetic design of the Macintosh but on my Mac I have 5 operating systems. I have OS X. I have Sheepshaver Rompler Emulation of OS9 which I use routinely. I have windows which I use all the time for sound design, and DOS which I also use all of the time for sound design, and Linux as well.

Are you concerned about your image? If so, in what ways?

That's an interesting question and no one has ever asked me that before. I wouldn't say I am necessarily concerned about my image more than I am sort of my legacy in a way, which is weird, a big word to use when you are not 40. I do think about my body of work as a whole quite a bit, so that is something I think about. The consistency, my artistic output, and how it will be viewed as a whole in a hundred or two hundred years from now so that is what I think about, my image not so much. (Laughs) If I did I wouldn't have such stupid haircuts!

What kind of car do you drive?

This is a funny question. I drive a Prius.

Are you addicted to Twitter?

That would definitely be affirmative, although the text book Merck's manual definition of addiction you would have to ask my mother whom is a clinical psychiatrist.

What is it about Twitter that holds your interest more than other social networking sites?

That's a really easy one for me to answer honestly. It's the authenticity of it. It feels like a very authentic way to exchange with people. It's the first social media that ever had that kind of feeling to me. I like FaceBook too, I like both of them but I like the immediacy of Twitter.

What are some of the things that would compel you to dislike a fellow producer or musician?

One of the reasons why I think there's been such a tremendous amount of success as if were for the entire community of hip-hop music is because there hasn't been all that sort of BS bickering back and forth that we have, and that sort of snobbery and elitism in Electronic music where you see people making double decaffeinated, half caff, half step, drum and drill, or whatever. Then that person and three of their friends make music just like them and they are the only people that listen to it and if you don't make that kind of music then you are ousted from the chin stroking intelligence. (Laughs) There is not really anything that would make me like a producer or musician unless they were just an ass. I find something to like about almost everyone's work. Some of the large portion of which would never interest me on a creative level trying to create myself but I can find things to appreciate about just about everyone's work from the Electronic music community that are pro's that I hear in many different idioms of Electronic music. I'm kind of a perpetual optimist in always finding things to like about people in general.

If you could address each and every one of your fans right now, what would you tell them?

If I could give them two bits of advice one of them would be to not just believe that anything of your choosing is manifest able but to experimentally go out and seize that yourself. The other thing I would say is that the best thing all of us can do at all times is to just be here, kind of in the now.

Do you have any other comments for the readers of 365Mag?

No, I don't but I really enjoyed this interview. It's cool, there were some really thoughtful and interesting questions in here, so thanks so much for this!

365Mag would like to thank BT for his time and answers.

Interview with Ferry Corsten

http://www.365mag.com/index.php?pg=...+Music+Magazine

Dutch Sensation Ferry Corsten is about to kick off his Once Upon a Night World Tour at the Winter Music Conference next week. We are quite excited to see what he has in store for us. The Trance superstar will also be releasing a compilation album featuring some great artists. Ferry talked to us about the detail that is involved with the set up of his upcoming event, as well as the joys of being a father, and more…

You'll be launching the kick-off to the 'Once Upon A Night' world tour at Winter Music Conference (March 27 @ Karu & Y). What are some of the enhancements to the event that the crowd can expect?

The show Once Upon A Night is based on the launch of my brand new compilation series. The idea of the album is to take my listeners with me on a night out and give them an idea of what a kind of night they would have. The show will be an interactive one and the production is going to be based on an album cover that comes to life. For every show I have a number of guest DJs planned, e.g. WMC Solarstone, Cosmic Gate, Sied van Riel… I'm really excited to present and tour with the concept this year.

How many hours of work is involved for the staging of your shows for example Full on Ferry, and Once Upon A Night?

It is a long process and takes definitely hundreds if not thousands of work. Not only for me but also for so many others that help make the show possible. There's the brainstorming of ideas, the actual production build up from sketches, footage, etc. There's the constant number of meetings throughout the months to make sure that everyone is on the same page. I guess I work with very passionate people who love what they do so it's great to have the intense amount of enthusiasm … but it does take a while.

What is the longest set you have ever performed and when and where was it?

Wow. I remember I had an album concert for my artist album “ Right of Way” where I played from about 10:30pm to 6:30am BUT since it was daylight saving that morning, I played an extra hour… so 9 hours!

You recently performed at the Nokia Theatre for Made Event in New York for the first time. What did you think of the venue and the lighting design?

The venue was beautiful and the concept was great! I saw it recently on youtube and it looked amazing.

[/b]You mentioned that some of the locations you've performed in have influenced your latest compilation Once Upon A Night. Can you be more specific as to what type of influence each of the countries you were referring to in this comment provided to the overall vibe?[/b]

Well first of all the cover of the CD is from my hometown Rotterdam, which has largely influenced my music over the years. It's also my home base and my place of refuge. Other than that, I wanted to take people on an imaginary journey through my CD and take them to some of the places that I've played in the last year. From the tropical beach of Bali (I played the Salttank Leaving Town there for the first time) to my “holy” snow boarding vacation in Austria where I would listen to various tracks of the album while snowboarding.

Can we expect future follow-ups to the 'Once Upon A Night' series approximately once a year, or more or less frequently?

We do have plans to release a second one later in the year.

Can you tell us some of the procedures you go through behind the scenes in order to keep yourself organized?

Good question! I'm a bit of a control freak with regard to my music so I'm pretty much on the ball with things like radio show, preparing for shows, producing in the studio… But for all the other stuff... I'm glad I have a good team around me to help.

How old is your daughter now?

She's about a year and a half and everything they say about Fatherhood is true. I adore her.

Are you enjoying watching her through her first steps of growing up?

Do I! My daughter is bilingual and it's amazing to see her speak both Dutch and English. The other week before she went to sleep she said in Dutch “Bye Bye Papa” and then said “ Bye Bye” after in English. I thought my heart melted.

Please describe a recent experience in which you felt enlightened by learning something valuable or interesting.

I'm a Discovery Channel freak and love watching this after a long day in the studio. It helps me empty my brain and fill it with other interesting news or facts…

Do you notice any trends when it comes to quality releases, for example certain months may be hotter than others?

You do notice that a lot of producers are saving their best releases for the Miami Winter Music Conference dates or the Ibiza season. Usually, it is a bit slower between the holidays and the end of January. I guess everyone has to go on vacation at some point

Do you have any exciting news in regards to Flashover Recordings any of your sub-labels such as Moody Moon?

We've just started a new label called Premier, which is a joint venture between Flashover and Blackhole Recordings.

Do you have any other comments for the readers of 365Mag?

Thanks for the interview and hope you can make it over to Karu & Y for the launch of my show.

365Mag would like to thank Ferry for his time and answers!
