Hmmm... Gouda

By the way, you mentioned it's hard to get a job there because of the fierce competition. Would you be willing to work in Brazil? I suspect it would be quite easy for you to get job specially in the Amazon. It's no Bavaria but, hey, if you like sun you'll be in for a treat

Since I wanted to leave academia independently of the terrible job prospects the answer is no. So many things wrong with it in my field...
I can imagine that going to Brazil is an attractive option for others who want to stay in university. Do you have a lot of foreign faculty? Just for comparison, in the countries STEM PhD typically want to go (Germany, France, UK, US) the rough numbers are that 3 out of 20 PostDocs manage to become faculty eventually. So if you have something better than that to offer, with decent funding opportunities, then people should be flocking in.

Since we're on the topic of jobs...

I don't understand unemployment. Three months ago I was laid off due to our company losing a contract and everyone at that location getting sacked. I was unemployed for exactly four days and I got another job. Now I've got two jobs with a possibility of a third next month as well. I didn't really put much of an effort towards any of this either.

How is it that people can't land a job?

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-03-2016 21:55:

I would say it depends greatly on your area of expertise and the availability of jobs in that sector. The partner of a friend is an engineer and worked for Porsche (I believe) in Spain but he was laid off and spent a year unemployed. He was highly qualified and well paid but he didn't want to drop down to some job far below what he'd been doing previously, and similar positions matching his speciality were scarce, particularly given the state of the Spanish economy.

If you're willing to flip burgers for minimum wage you can always find a job of some sort, but a lot of people would rather wait for another job in their chosen career path than do menial work for cash in the interim.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-03-2016 21:56:

I actually think it's due to a sense of entitlement. Entitled people aren't willing or able, or both, to put in the effort required to find a job. That includes following up on interviews and jobs they were turned down for for feedback, etc.

I believe these are the same people who don't know what it means to take pride in one' s work and generally have a shitty work ethic. Because they're special, obviously, and are worthy of more/better. Haaaaaa.

edit: yeah see, System J is sort of saying the same thing.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Jan-03-2016 22:01:

Yeah, I suppose that's a major part of it.

I never really defined myself by my job - I work to live, not the other way around. I suppose if I waited around for a job that matches my education I'd still be unemployed too.

Learned today: In French, the word for "cock slap" is "une biffle," combining the words "une bite" (cock) and "une giffle" (slap).

The verb "to cock slap" is "biffler."

Take note, Jenny! This vocabulary could come in handy.

LOL. In my next life, I wish to have a cock so large I can routinely employ this "biffler".

Lol! Thanks!

I actually drove by a building yesterday with a sign out front that said "Learn Spanish to French conversion!"

Not quite what I'm after but since it was literally a sign, I'm gonna drive by again today and see if they offer conversational French classes too. Wewt!

Dude. You're spot on. French guys love talking about their balls here.

Ok California you won, I love you. You're dropdead gorgeous, unprofessional, and you have made a relaxed man out of me. I guess people were right to call me an old man in junior high, I must've walked around with a buttplug on.

You know when you log into TA and see a funny, interesting, or intelligent poster has replied to a bunch of threads, and you think to yourself "Oh boy, some good reading material!"??

I feel the exact opposite way when the poster is Lagrangian. :/
