No, they make no money till we make money, and they own nothing of ours till they reach a certain dollar amount in sales and royalties. They haven't made money off our work yet because we haven't.

I know they haven't made money. But they got a lot of work done for which they normally would have needed to invest money. Great for them, but not for you.
If I had a business idea I'd love to find some suckers who do all the start-up work for free.

We were already developing this before we signed up with them. I'd still be doing the work for free, but down a distributor (though we had other offers at the time, including some fairly big name defense contractors).

Same here, and i agree, kindergartens, schools, and daycare centers are some of the dirtiest places on the planet. It takes a group of hard working janitors to clean that mess. And most schools don't really care for it, since good janitorial sercives can be expensive.
