Record Stores

The service at Play De Record is horrible. I ordered around 10 records from them 3 months ago in exchange for something that I returned. I asked them to send me the prices of the vinyls before ordering them which never happened. Til now, they haven't brought in anything even though I've been bugging them about it for the past 2 months. They haven't even ordered anything yet! I ordered 4 records from them last year for the same reason and received them over 2 months after. I've learnt my lesson and won't be buying anything from them. Such shitty service.. and I bet if you were to talk to some of the workers there they'd talk on and on about the cons of vinyl dying out / people not buying their music, yet they're doing nothing to preserve the sole function of their store; selling records. I wouldn't be surprised if they've discouraged other customers from buying there. It's their loss at the end of the day.

Anyways, are there any other stores that you would recommend? I've been to Sonic Boom which is pretty good. They've got a solid electronic section. Slinky audio @ Moog was pretty good too, but it's a shame they moved out. I've thought of ordering from the guy that used to run it (Paul) who is now working from home. HMV is pretty good for compilation cds. Are there any stores dedicated to electronic music, similar to the ones you'd come across in Soho (London)?

There's always the option of buying online, which works out at times. Shipping costs can be a pain in the ass, especially if you're only buying one vinyl. I'd prefer to get my records from a store that orders in bulk so that I don't have to pay as much.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

List of online record stores:

Discogs (US)
Amazon (Canada)
Juno Records (UK)
Record Sale (Germany)
Decks (Germany)
Chemical Ltd. Records (UK)
Honest Jon's Records (UK)
Piccadilly Records (UK)
Phonica Records (UK)
BM Soho (UK)
Rough Trade Shops (UK)

I'll add a small description for each site soon.

Unfortunately buying vinyl locally isn't what it used to be these days. Shop online. Shipping is a bitch, but if you grab a few at a time it's not too bad, and you at least know when to expect them.

This, and shipping from the UK isn't bad at all.

ya agreed, i buy my stuff online mostly, since i get exactly what i want and in no time.

driving from my area to a record shop in to and sift through thousands of records is not really ideal for me unless im just going for some supersales of old stuff. sometimes i buy in huge batches for cheap but its mostly old rock/jazz/electronic music..

juno is probably my favourite because they are located in UK and if you do a few at once they slightly lower the shiping with each record.

Also discogs is an amazing resource i use all the time, have to be carefull with shipping prices on there first, if you ship from a far coutry it will be very expensive, US/UK is cheapest.

Offtopic. I'd love to eventually start an online shop here in canada so i could ship to people here in canada for a cheap flat fee but it may take some proper investement which im not ready for atm.

Aside from Discogs, I've become rather fond of recordsale.de - very reasonable shipping rates.

Haven't purchased from a physical store in Toronto since Metropolis shut shop...so, about 5 years, now.

http://www.decks.de/ is great too, good for bpm info on some tracks and you can play with that virtual turntable pitch to see how the record would sound when you play it.

How was it back in the day? Were there more specialized stores for edm? I know of several small rock shops that are doing alright. I think part of their success stems from supporting local artists or specific genres that appeal to certain sub-scenes. It's a small community of devoted people that keep these small stores going, but hey.. they're still kicking. The same recipe for success seems to apply to edm stores I've been to outside the country. They focus on certain sounds and have a steady network of customers that know each other through clubs, labels, and promotion companies. Maybe if someone applies the same model here, it will get something going. Gera, get it started!

You've also got larger stores that cater to a wide variety of more specific tastes; a local example being Sonic Boom. It definitely takes a lot of work to stay relevant to such a wide customer base, but if it's done well.. it can work out.

True. I've noticed that. Are there any specific retailers you'd recommend? Even smaller ones on sites like discogs.

Ahh mystery boxes. I've always been hesitant to buy an old box of used records for the reason of only finding a few tunes that I'd actually listen to. Still, you can find some good stuff if the person has good taste. A friend of mine does this and lands a box packed with gems every once in a while. Then he ends up selling a box of unwanted records to an unfortunate bloke ahahah.

Still haven't tried out Juno. I'll check it out.

Discogs is the best site I've come across for music. Great resource!

I've bought a few things from decks before and they've got a wicked selection. Shipping's a little steep though, especially the courier rates. Still a great site. Wish we had something like this on this side of the planet.

Sweet. I'll definitely be checking that out. You know your stuff when it comes to techno so I'll take your word for it.

What was Metropolis like? Why'd they shut down?

Thanks for the info guys. Really appreciate it!

When I first started buying records, if you didn't get to the shop the day the shipment came in, you got the leftovers. Unless you ordered off the list for the next week, which meant buying tracks based on written descriptions, and then you were obligated to buy them because they were special orders. Otherwise you could call a record shop in a city and hope whoever was working would play selections of tracks over the phone. Man, times sure have changed.

Of course that was all after walking two miles in the snow to the store and... wait, wow I sound like such an old man.

Get off my lawn!

also to add to this list, some of the recent ones i've also used were www.eil.com and also www.piccadillyrecords.com

btw stay away from www.clone.nl, their shipping rates to canada are fucking retarded, like 37 euro to ship one record..

if you shuffle between different sites you can find the best deal on shipping vs availability vs price..
