I read the review of the book by Dennis Lehane (who wrote Mystic River) and it certainly sounds almost identical to what I saw in the movie:

Hmm.. The last sentence of that review hits on precisely my thoughts on the end of the book. Maybe it stayed truer than I thought it would. Added to the Netflix queue for when it's released!

agreed about the last sentence. Especially at the end when the boy is talking to the family. I don't know how the book ended, but the boy's expression and asking the man if "he had it?" was pure magic. brought some tears in the theater.......

anyways, dug up an old gem a couple of days ago

wasn't really too keen on the clint-morgan freeman combination. it fit a bit better in 'Unforgiven'. Other than that, this was just absolutely beautiful. I forgot how awesome this movie was, and deserves all the awards it got a couple of years ago. yeah after the ending, it just made me have the urge to want to kill that bitch who sent hilary swank to the hospital, and slap hilary's family one by one for being jackasses.

also forgot to mention. now my favorite clint eastwood directed movie closely above 'Unforgiven' with 'Mystic River' hanging 3rd. I am not really fond of his early cowboy movies. Haven't watched 'Changeling', but i have heard it's good. might have to reshift my top 3 clint eastwood directed movies.

people may put 'midnight in the garden of good and evil' up there as a top movie, but i wasn't thrilled about the movie when i saw it.

Guy Pierce's last 2 cameos, both single scene offerings in this and The Hurt Locker, are better than all his previous work combined except for Memento.

Um, very different. What family? I don't think there are more than five words spoken by the boy in the entire book.

well there's the difference. they gave the boy some dialogue in the movie.

there's always a difference between the movie and the book. One of these days i'm going to get the book.

as much as i hated Swank's role, it fit into the storyline as a small town redneck girl who wasn't feeling fulfilled in life bussing tables and scrimping for change and food, and wanted to do something what she loved to do, and that was to box.
