The story behind "Cygnus X - Superstring" by Matthias Hoffmann | Muzikxpress 120

Cool interview with Matthias Hoffmann from Cygnus X.

From being a studio guitarist for bands such as Quincy Jones and Sheila E, producing the legendary Cygnus X - Supertrinx to founding one of the world's first trance labels, Eye-Q records, with Sven Vath and now producing rock music.

This is really nice, hearing something about Cygnus X and more from that era from Hoffmann himself, after all these years. Seems a cool guy.

I never knew about that Snap track that totally riffs off Superstring!

A nice interview but would have liked some questions about the b-side “Positron”, was kind of surprised it wasn’t even mentioned.

To be honest, this was one of the less interesting ones. The guy clearly doesn't give a shit about that era of his career and doesn't go into much detail. It would have been nice to have more context about The Omen club and the Frankfurt scene at that time too, which is barely touched upon.

You'll need a good interviewer who knows about the artist's history + context asking good questions..

I just started watching all those interviews that muzikexpress does. Really great stuff. Anybody out there still toying with that old trance sound? I can't find anything new that has that classic, deep, rich and soulful sound.

Maybe it's because it's a channel that's only realistically going to be watched by trance geeks, but I often feel Twan's questions don't really put these classic records in context of what was going on in the scene. I suspect the majority of modern trance fans know Superstring from the 2001 Rank 1 remixes and many of them are probably only vaguely aware of The Omen and Eye-Q Records. This interview could have shed a lot of light on the origins of the genre.
