Thing is josh, when u play with a nord it doesn't radiate trance. when u play a virus right away you say "ok this is for tencho/trance". the nl3 is a performance synth, it can make a very wide range of sounds, not only for trance but for many other genres.

the virus isn't a "trance only" synth.. it's used in many other styles.

I highly recommend the enu 1212m. A few reasons why it's a great card is

1.It has great ad/da converters, top of the line used in the flagship pro tools system. The only stuff that sounds better is if you dish out 3000$ for something like an apogee 8000.
2.Latency is very low, can go to 2ms.
3. Sound quality is incredible and even beats cards like the Lynx 2(1500$) in most snr and freq tests, even better if u export at 24 96.
4. The drivers although still in their infancy are very stable.
5. The onboard emu dsp chip is great. You can run pretty cool effects without any hit on cpu.
6. if you need more inputs , you can always buy the breakout box seperatley (300us$)

Here is a superb review with sample tests.

thanks a lot !! u made my choise a lot easier ...

@thecYrus indeed the virus is multifunctional ... i use it in chillout / ambient tracks too , offcourse trance, but also hardstyle and even hip-hop tunes are possible ...

so i think, if you can manage to think the way you should ... and learning about & creating with the virus ... u have plenty possibility's ... however a Nordrack3 would be also nice to add it in my homestudio

and what was said about : sitting in the mix ... it's all about mastering & experience ...

@trancenrg69 : is it possible to post a screenshot when the mixer-software is on your screen ... to select line-in's and out's ... ?

Greetz, despe

You got me wrong cyrus. I didn't say the virus isnt a versatile synth. I plan on gettin the powercore virus very soon as I love the virus as well. But you cannot deny the fact that the virus is catered towards the dance genre, just by listening to the default patches you can see they are trying to attract the techno/dance/trance/house/industrial crowd. But I agree it can be used in many genres also from electronica all the way to rock and pop.

Josh, the Virus C is also a very good synth. I plan on gettin it also as a nl3 /virus combo is great combo for a trance producer.

Whatever works for you, like i said, go demo them all. Who knows you may prefer the commercial sounding supernova 2 synth, or the harsh digital phatter sound of a waldorf q. It's personal taste. Go try em!

Well, the sound set can really change the synths attractiveness for a user. I have a yamaha ex5 and while it was geared to all synth users, I uploaded the euro sound set and it became a trance machine. The majority of synth manufactures stick to this route, i.e. mass marketing. Yet, it is far more effective to market a synth to a particular genre or user. At least most musicains starting out only like a singular kind of music, most musicains end up liking every kind of music in the end I believe.

The groovebox stuff is marketed for the dj and dance music scene. I do believe the virus is marketed for the electronic music scene, if not, it sure became that way by word of mouth. Personally I find the nord lead 3 geared towards electronic music, but is diverse enough for film scores, etc. When you see sounds like phropeht and matrix, I think trance or better yet 80's where trance came from anyways. Obviously a present of rogue would appeal to techno, trance etc. unless I missed that psytrance and etc. love the moog rogue.

Ps I fixed the nord lead 3! No more sticky buttons yah! How do you use the nord lead 3 as your controller, in cubase? I have yet to set up the contections for it.

Well.. I don't have a camera so you'll have to make do with an artist's impression

The box for my PC is missing but it's under the desk so was hard to draw.. ah well.
Those weird looking blocks on the surface to the left are two technics 1210s and a mixer... on a £10 plank of wood from B&Q, resting on top of my speakers

Here's my software kit:

I got mine off some dude who bought it, used it for one month, then got fedup of the presets lol maybe someone should of told him about the other ones on the clavia website, i doubt he knew how to load them. i got mine for 1850 canadian off him. check ebay they go for anywhere from 1200us-1600us used. in some cases new if your lucky.

I was alvays wondering what kind of cables people use, I find that owning a set of $10 cables is robbing me somewhat of the sound quality possible from the synths that I own. I want to invest in some monster cables as well I think. The ones for pro audio seem like a logical choice. I work at a sony repair depot, and I know from experiance what dieffernce a good cable makes. And a lot of our tech repair guys will swear by good quality cables. Thank god I only need 3 sets, 2 for the synths and one for the monitors, casue thease things can get expensive. Let me know how you like your set.

Hey Dirty, I did alot of reaseach on cables and they make a difference especially if you compare shitty ones to the higher end stuff like monster or planet waves. I figure I spent so much on the nl3 im not gonna cheap it out on cables. The monster p500's are specfically designed for keyboards and are supposidly incredible and highly recommended and used in pro studios. I'll let u know how they are when i get them. As for TRS cables for my Events, I got custom made Hosa's. Basically they use their mic cables which are quad based (very good cable) with trs connectors. They are less expensive (32$US a pair) then monsters trs cables without sacrificing too much in terms of quality. The important thing is that your cables for your hardware should be highest quality because your using them to record obviously.

I can't wait to get the Poco Virus. I'm sure it's a beast and from what I read from others and from what you say I'm gonna love it. Are you going to keep your Virus C, or sell it?

Well I really thought about selling it but i decided am going to keep it. I like It a lot, I wanted it for so long and now I have it. I am trying not to fall into the problem i had before, which was buying lot's of synths and stuff. Really those days are over at list for me. With my virus c and Cubase sx2 i can do so much that cuple years ago You could only dream of unless you had cash for tons of gear. I am only interested in getting some better cables right now, and a better set of monitors in the future. Other than that I am going to stick to what i have and enjoy it. I just recently had a discussion with a friend of my who comes over on regular basis and plays around in my studio, and we both come to conclusion that It's enought for anything we I or he wants to do. Like I said a set of better monitors for christmass, and new cables like really soon, that's on top of the list. The only one thing that I know that i will also wont is a faster cpu sometimes next year or so, so i can run more effects and stuff.. but cpu is something that most people upgrade sooner or later...
