the truth is MLSE couldn't care less if they win a cup because they sell the place out every game anyway. Hell, they don't even care about hockey! All they give a shit about is getting me to buy one of their condos then mortgaging it through their financial services. The Leafs will continue to barely make the playoffs or miss then all together until such time as a) someone buys them who actually wants the prestige of a winning team, or b) Torontonians smarten up and stop going to games or buying merchandise until such time as the Leafs put forward a truelly competative team. |
The maple leafs and any other hockey team in the NHL makes a great deal of its revenue through sales of playoff tickets. Prices are higher, and the more games you play, the more money you will make. So, it is in the best interest (financially) of every team to go as far as you can.
Prior to the salary cap, Toronto was only behind the Rangers for highest payroll, and even now, theyre spending the maximum.
Dont be naive, the Leafs want to win a championship, its just not the only facet of the business for them.
