Tiger winning the Masters = biggest headline of his career?

There is always going to be a circus around tiger....regardless of what has happened. The media circus that will surround his return will be a distraction to all...with many questions left unanswered at this point. If tiger was to return prior to the masters then the media could get his return out of their system and then when the masters comes around they can just focus on the typical over hype of tiger in a tournament.

I think Tiger's last US open would still rank above him winning the masters this year.

totally agree with first para, however, not with the 2nd in terms of magnitude. Winning the U.S.Open the way he did on a bum knee was utterly remarkable but the mainstream public/media would put a Master's win above all, especially if the wife is in tow.

He wins this year and it would top an already memorable career. It could surpass the 2010 Olympics and World Cup as sports story of the year, though this is hardly sports we're talking about

Not necessarily. The media frenzy surrounding tiger will definitely be more controlled at the masters. The tournament directors control every aspect of the event i.e. ticket distribution, who has access to the grounds, the media and also how the tournament is covered by the networks, more so than the bay hill or tavistock cup the week before where anyone can purchase a ticket to gain entry into the grounds.

I agree with tigers decision to return to the masters as it was his first major and IMO a more controlled environment.

either way im glad to see he'll be back soon.

Tiger's P.R. team made a good decision in having him come back at the masters for the exact reasons you give. The control of the patrons is definitely stronger at the masters then any other tournament. I had a friend who went a couple years ago and he actually got a BOOK of rules that patrons must follow or they will be escorted off the premises. I still believe the media will be relentless in trying to get information from tiger which he will not give up....this is an undue stress on him. I guarantee other golfers will be interviewed during the week and after their rounds about tiger and its not fair to put them in a position like that during a major. If Tiger would have played two weeks before the masters, which was rumored, then the media would have had their chance to get it out of their system and tiger being at the masters would have been a non-story....which is not the case now.

I've hit the indoor a few times now and looking forward to the season. If the weather stays this way, courses should start opening up in a couple weeks.

As for Tiger, good choice in the Masters due to the hefty security and screening of media. Not so good for other players as I'm sure every interviewed player will get a question about Tiger. At least Jesper won't be in the field, which will avoid some drama. I'm definitely interested in the state of Tiger's game. Will he own the field or be calling fore on every drive?

From the PGA Tour Site

1. CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT -- From the media impact to the size of the galleries, the Masters can make Augusta National a very hospitable place for Woods. Media credentials, in fact, were just recently sent out, and non-traditional golf media may get shut out. And, of course, tickets to the tournament are among the toughest to acquire for any sporting event, with badges passed down from generation to generation. "Augusta is one place in the world that you can really have control, and they will control everything from the crowds to the situation that will be facing Tiger," Arnold Palmer said. "I think that if there is a place in the world that you can do that and do it properly, Augusta will do that."

2. SPEAKING OF THE CROWDS -- You can bet they will be on the best behavior ... as they always are at Augusta National. Genteel behavior and proper decorum are part of the unique aspect of Masters patrons. As Bobby Jones wrote in 1967: "Most distressing to those who love the game of golf is the applauding or cheering of misplays or misfortunes of a player. Such occurrences have been rare at the Masters but we must eliminate them entirely if our patrons are to continue to merit their reputation as the most knowledgeable and considerate in the world." Mr. Jones probably didn't envision a scenario such as this, but you can expect Masters officials to encourage their patrons to continue adhering to the message.

3. FAMILIAR COURSE -- Many people assumed that Woods needed a tune-up event before teeing it up at a major. But if Woods is going to go into any major "cold," it would be the Masters, which he has won four times, the last time in 2005. He knows all the nooks and crannies of Augusta National, knows how to play each hole. His game might be rusty (or it may not -- see below), but his knowledge of the course won't be.

4. EXTRA PREP TIME -- When Woods called Palmer to tell him that he wouldn't be defending his title at Bay Hill next week, he mentioned that his game was not "up to speed to play this early." By giving himself a few more weeks on the range, Woods will be able to hone his game into the kind of competitive state he'll need as he chases the 15th major of his career.

5. COMPETING STORYLINE -- Tiger's return obviously is a huge story. On other weeks, it would likely overshadow everything else. But at Augusta National, the Tiger storyline will be competing with the competition storyline that results from the season's first major. Whether it actually happens or not, the Masters at least offers the potential for Tiger's comeback to be just "a story" instead of "the story."

6. POTENTIAL STORYBOOK FINISH -- What's the best way for Tiger to encourage his fans and sponsors to move past the off-course developments of the previous four months and shift their focus to what's happening on the course? Win a tournament, of course. And what's the best way to generate the fastest and biggest shift? Win a major, of course. Should Tiger emerge victorious on April 11 at Augusta National, he'd get a huge booster shot in terms of moving on with his life -- and the water cooler talk once again will be about Tiger's golf game.

Tiger master of his domain

Biggest tournament actually safe choice for Woods' return

By KEN FIDLIN, QMI Agency

Tiger Woods will begin trying to restore a reputation battered by marital infidelities at next month's Masters tournament. (REUTERS/Shaun Best)
At first blush, it seems like a crazy idea.

After nearly five months away, enduring endless anguish over his ruinous off-course behaviour, Tiger Woods is going to make his return to the sport he has dominated at one of the most important tournaments in golf.

How can his game, neglected while he tried to sort through the debris of his personal life, be up to the challenge that the Masters poses?

Most times in the past when Woods has come back after a layoff, he has tuned himself up at a lesser event.

The only time he did not play a tuneup before a major was in 2006 after his father died prior to the U.S. Open.

He shot matching rounds of 76 at Winged Foot, missing the cut.

That said, when you think for a while about this latest decision it begins to make a lot of sense.

Here are five reasons why.

1. The Course

This an easy call for Tiger.

Woods feels as comfortable on Augusta National as he does on any golf course he plays. This is where he won his first major championship in 1997 and since then he has won three more Masters titles.

He knows every nuance of the slippery, undulating greens. If there is some rust on his long game, he knows where he can miss fairways and still give himself chances for birdies.

2. The Club

There is no golf tournament that is more tightly controlled than the Masters. The members of Augusta National are some of the wealthiest, single-minded businessmen in the world.

They couldn't care less what the rest of us think of them. They run their tournament their way and if anybody gets out of line, whether it's a patron or a media member, it's -- 'Y'all don't come back now.'

Media accreditation closed long ago, so don't expect a phalanx of paparazzi inside the golf course. You can bet that, ever since the Tiger firestorm struck in late November, the Masters communications staff has been vigilant.

Every accreditation is vetted carefully and if an application has a whiff of 'celebrity media' about it, it will be denied.

3. The Gallery

Masters patrons are a sporting crowd like no other.

The Masters has been sold out since 1972, when a waiting list for tickets was established.

By 1978, the waiting list was abolished as a waste of time, because nobody gave up their tickets. Even practice round passes are like gold, sold by lottery only.

So, year after year, the same people come to eastern Georgia to worship at the church of Augusta National. This is not the Phoenix Open, populated by thousands of drunken college students.

This is the most reverential golf crowd anywhere, aware totally that they walk this hallowed ground at the whim of the members.

Heckle Tiger Woods?

This April there would be no quicker way to get hustled off the property. You can be sure Tiger will have his usual bloated galleries but don't expect him to have to deal with the kinds of comments he might hear elsewhere.

4. The Sponsors

The Masters is one of those rare events, like the Kentucky Derby or the Indianapolis 500, that transcends its sport.

People who don't know a sand wedge from a sandwich tune in because it's a tradition, a harbinger of spring and a rare glimpse at some of the most beautiful golf scenery anywhere.

It creates huge television audiences, and those audiences have big money to spend. In the history of sports, TV has never had a pitchman to compare with Eldrick Woods.

He is sport's first billionaire athlete but during his recent, self-inflicted troubles, he was shedding revenue faster than Toyota. Some sponsors bailed, a few remained.

To come back at the Masters with so many pairs of eyes watching around the world, Woods is rewarding those who stuck by him and trying to stick it to those who didn't.

5. The Challenge

A few weeks back, in his controlled, televised statement, Woods made some lofty promises about his future behaviour on course. He knows from the time he steps up for his first Masters practice shot until he hits his last shot on Sunday that his every move, his every nuanced facial expression will be analyzed.

This is his chance to make good on those promises.

No swearing. No club-throwing.

He vowed to be more respectful of the game. If those turn out to be empty words, then it will make his entire mea culpa ring falsely.

Big stage. Big expectations.

Just the way Tiger Woods used to like it.

So Daly made another cut....I am really hoping this is a good comeback year for Daly. He really needs to work on his driving accuracy and his GIR or else he will find himself missing a lot of cuts. I don't think we'll ever see a Major Winning John Daly again but he can still make a great living finishing in the top 30 week after week.

Did anyone see the last hole yesterday? Furyk hit a drive into the woods. Trying to get out, he shanks it and almost hit a person in the head that was standing too close.

I can't believe how brave some people are and how much trust they have in professional golfers hitting the ball exactly where they are aiming.

Good on Jim for scrambling for the win though!
