I have no trouble understanding Americans, even the deep south accents. A good portion of TV available over here is from the US, so I've grown up listening to the various accents, and I'm pretty used to them. Most Americans wouldn't have grown up watching Australian TV though, hence it's probably a bit more difficult for them to understand.
I know what you mean about the 'country' Australian accent though, lol. I can understand it fine, but it's... a bit rough around the edges
And LOL at you thinking we sound like the British. They have tons of different accents!
