he finally does what he should do every fight, use his jitz!!! but at WW he is definitely outsized and at a disadvantage. Stick to 155 and go to the ground! he is still one of my favs though.

He has turned into a lazy fighter in recent year.

Because I haven't seen the Penn that took out Florian and Sanchez in a few years.

That was never even close. It was hard to tell if Shogun was just completely off his game or injured, or if Jones really is just that dominant. It looked to me like he underestimated Jones and kinda did a "holy shit, this guy is fast" and didn't get a chance to do anything before he was halfway to being out.

At this point, the only way I can see Jones going down is to somebody with phenomenal ground skills and tons of stamina. You have to be able to withstand 3-4 rounds of assault and let him wear himself out, then go for a submission imo. That reach advantage is just insurmountable. Even somebody like Shogun has no chance on his feet (though he could have done better).

Man, was I wrong about this one.

I hate to be so negative, but I didn't think either guy looked particularly great in the main event last night. Shogun gassed out in about three minutes, and--not to make any excuses--but to my eyes looked a whole lot more like the guy who got choked out by Forrest Griffin and barely beat Mark Coleman of all people than the guy who put on good performances against Liddel and Machida. I don't really know what he was thinking on the ground either. He kept trying to grab Jones' left leg, either to try and transition into a leg lock attempt or to try a half guard sweep, but it was just so obvious that with Jones' length and wide base there was no way he was going to even come close to having enough leverage to go for either of those from that position, so i don't know why he kept trying it.

Jones looked better, but it's hard to look bad going up against a guy who's just standing in front of you, completely exhausted, not really even trying anything. I love the improvisational skills, but his striking fundamentals still aren't there, and to be honest I thought he tired out himself pretty early which isn't particularly reassuring considering that he was basically able to control the entire pace of the fight. Maybe it was nerves, the short turnaround after the Bader fight, or some combination thereof, but he just didn't look as dynamic as usual, and it didn't seem like it had anything to do with anything Shogun was offering up.

Honestly the whole night was pretty full of uninspiring performances. I made a lot of money betting on Brendan Schaub, but I thought he looked about as bad as one can in a one-sided knockout win, and I thought he regressed from the Gonzaga fight.

The only guy who really impressed me was Jim Miller. He's just such a well-rounded guy, and is dangerous in every position. I still think he loses to Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar, but he really deserves a shot to prove me wrong. I guess Eric Koch looked pretty good as well. Hopefully he can get a shot at another top featherweight pretty soon.

I think it really was a case of Shogun just being caught completely off-guard by just how big and fast Jones was, and immediately discarding whatever game plan he had originally brought into the ring. The layoff since Machida didn't help either--he really looked lost at first. After those strikes up against the cage, he had no shot. I'm surprised the fight lasted as long as it did.

The reason I mentioned dragging out the fight is that, for all his explosiveness, Jones was gassed, and somebody else might have taken advantage of it.

I do think you're underestimating Jones, though. He is still raw, but he has such a huge physical advantage that it will be hard for anyone to exploit his weaknesses in technique. I thought he actually looked much better last night, and, keep in mind, he will be even better the next time he fights.

It didn't look to me like Jones was gassed at all.

Actually, to me it looked like he was pacing himself to avoid that exact issue later in the fight.

I dunno who's going to beat him at that weight class, but I have a feeling it's going to have to be a really entertaining fight when he loses. Maybe Anderson Silva will move up and show Jones how it's done.

I didn't watch last night's card, but Jones looked solid from the clips I've seen.

He's definitely not unbeatable, though. Nobody is. I mean, I thought Machida was unbeatable and look how that's turned out. I look forward to Jones' next few fights.
