Then again, I have not seen it in a couple years, so perhaps I would change my mind if I watched it again.

See, I would be the total opposite. The dynamics of the film are massive. You have basically 3 lives that you are following, all at the same time, and each takes a different path to the same impending doom.

i like how he's quietly charismatic though... Same with Cillian Murphy which is why i was stoked they were both in Inception...

It's the calm intelligent acting style, in complete opposition to the overracting of a lot of big guys (brad pitt is the worst imo), where everything they do is shoved down your throat... He also has a really great range

If you like JGL and you haven't seen Brick, I can't recommend it enough.

Film noir meets modern high school thriller with twin peaks feel.

Simply outstanding.

agreed. i'm gonna watch it again tonight before bed just to see if my opinions change. it's still a good film, but it is quite tacky, and some of the situations are pretty outrageous/outlandish and would never really happen irl, imo. for example, some of the events that would never happen which would totally make the movie pointless without them happening-

1. the entirety of new york city being dry on heroin. it would never happen. if it did, they could always find it somewhere else, nearby. jersey? DC? boston? i'm sure that shit is everywhere. especially when only ONE guy, the black dude who whores out the junkie girl, has obviously copious amounts of it, but no one else does? who does that guy get it from?

2. the dude continually hitting the same vein because "it's the only way he can get off," which eventually leads to him losing an arm. being that i know a couple addicts who use intraveneously, i know for a fact that that's not how it works- the vein collapses sooner or later and is no longer usable; the junkie then either moves to a different vein (inevitably ruining that one) or move up the vein a few inches away from their old injection spot. the old injection spots become impossible to hit because of scar tissue buildup.

3. the black dude who took the guy to the hospital, and then stayed there. he's a wanted man, bailjumping to score dope in fucking florida? like 20 hours away? why would he go that far when there's a billion other cities out there? they could've easily found oxy's or other replacement opiates i'm sure. my point is, being that he'd get locked away for a long time for bailjumping, i guarantee he would've in reality left his friend in the hospital and made sure the cops didn't bust him. he would've like, given his friend a # to call him when he got out so he could pick him up, but i guarantee he wouldn't have risked his ass to wait in the waiting room and get popped off.

that and one thing that has always pissed me off about that movie is how when they're bangin their dope, it shows their pupils dilate, which is the exact opposite effect of what happens when you're high on opiates. your pupils constrict to the size of pinpoints.

did not like. didn't expect much though. the graphic novels/manga/whatever was much better.

first of all, michael cera should not have been cast for the role. in the novel, scott pilgrim is dorky, but still kinda cool at the same time. cera in the film was a push-over pussy like how he is in every fucking role he plays. it's getting tiring. the rest of the cast was a bunch of b-list nobodies that didn't play their parts well. wallace's actor was fucking awful and not at all like how wallace is in the film, along with stephen stills.

my main gripe though, besides trying way too hard to emulate the quirkiness and video game pop culture references from the novel (which instead made the film awkward and cringe-worthy in many instances) was how they tried to squeeze 7 100+ page comics into 1 film. they had to omit soooo much of the plot to save time, and they rewrote the ending quite a bit, ruining it. if you liked the movie, definitely check out the books.

I can understand things not being realistic at times, but do you watch a film (that is entertainment mind you) and expect it to be representative of reality?

you're right of course, but given how popular Requiem has become, it's evolved into something much bigger than just entertainment: a sort-of glorified anti-drug, stay-in-school, make good decisions in life because the bads ones will fuck your shit up HARD message.
i've come across so many people in college, where movies like Requiem and Donnie Darko are "cult classics", who use Requiem as an argument against hard drug use. "Nah man I don't really wanna hang out with those guys, they do coke. haven't you seen requiem for a dream? ?"
when this kinda shit comes into play, suddenly getting things right/depicting them accurately becomes more important.
and, for what it's worth, everybody involved with the movie knew it was, on some level, an anti-drug message.

You need to consider why this film has caused society to presume that drugs will lead to this. The US is a fucking cesspool of idiocy when it comes to the true effects of drugs. I mean shit, we put marijuana dealers (yes, I mean ones that strictly only deal marijuana) in jail for longer than murderers!

Look at the people that are advocating for all drugs and alcohol being banned. They are religious morality idiots.
