It doesn't have to be real at all, but clearly tries to depict "it could be you characters" for the purpose of securing your involvement - the realism is what is trying to get at you, but the realism is so flawed by gaping holes in the substory that it fails to be believable.
So the suspension of disbelief is completely broken, and creating and maintaining that is what good film making is about, regardless of whether the film is meant to be realistic or not. Fantasy stories still have to have that suspension, so you can properly relate and not just cast it of as disposable.
I know, you're just meant to go with it, its the movies, but I just think that film, for all the hype and the boner (bonii?) people have about it is so badly over respected as some kind of cultural milestone. Some of the scenes are done very well (Mum gradually tripping out etc), which is also what annoys me because they are executed to a high level where upon the story itself undoes that finesse.
