A friend of mine traveled the whole country from Tokyo to Kagoshima to Sapporo (and back to Tokyo) by local train this summer... I might try that sometime soon, it sounds fun. |
I can tell you it's exhausting: The first time I went to Japan I went from Hiroshima to Sendai in a couple of weeks (Nagoya → Otsu → Osaka → Kyoto → Kobe → Hiroshima → Yokohama → Tokyo → Sendai → Nagano → Nagoya), and the second time I was going to go further north, but because of the earthquake, it was much more erratic (Nagoya → Nagano → Nagoya → Kanazawa → Nara → Osaka → Nagashima → Yokohama → Tokyo → Nagoya). The second trip was a bit of a waste, tourism wise, because we were shackled by Kaoru's graduation and subsequent trip back to Brazil.
These trips helped me understand I hate travelling (as in doing sight-seeing and doing bugger all other than just walk around the city), and I liked my second trip much better because, since I stayed in Nagoya for a while, I felt what it is like to live in a different country. Kaoru was surprised by how well I fit there once I found out how to ride the metro and go from "our apartment" to the bookshops in Sakae
