Toronto should put all their eggs in the Marlies basket. I say send all the players they can down to the Marlies and call up some OHL prospects and some Midget Houseleague players...hell I'll sign a 30 day contract and play for them.

So Burke has made it clear that he wants to move up in the draft and his goal is Tavarese. So what would it take to get that first overall pick?

IMO, the leafs are going to have to give up at least their first round pick, two second round picks, a roster player (Kaberle or Schenn), a prospect (????) and a boat load of money.

Former Leaf favourite Peter Zezel dies

Peter Zezel, one of the most popular Maple Leafs in the early 1990s, died today. He was 44.

A key contributor to Toronto's dramatic playoff runs in 1993 and 1994, Zezel had been battling a blood disorder, haemolytic anaemia, for the last decade.

Through treatments and medication, he lived a vibrant life, staying in his hometown of Toronto once he retired from his 15-year NHL career after the 1998-99 season. He coached AAA hockey in the Greater Toronto Hockey League for the Don Mills Flyers and was preparing for another season behind the bench with the minor-bantam squad.

Zezel also ran combination hockey/soccer/golf camps out of Markham that carried his name.

Haemolytic anemia destroys red blood cells faster than the body can replace them. Last week, Zezel went into hospital for chemotherapy treatments and to have his spleen removed. After the surgery, he complained of severe headaches, which led to further surgery. His organs began to fail, he lapsed into a coma and he was put on, then taken off, life support.

While Zezel, a gregarious, enthusiastic man, was very involved in the community, he will always be remembered for his contribution to a Leafs team that took Toronto on a joyous ride in the spring of 1993. That team came within one game of the Stanley Cup final when it lost the Western Conference final to Wayne Gretzky's Los Angeles Kings in seven games.

Offensively gifted – he set a Philadelphia rookie record for assists in 1984-85 – Zezel embraced the role of checking centre, relentless penalty killer and face off specialist in Toronto. Along with linemates Bill Berg and Mark Osborne, he was a huge part of a team that almost made it to the Stanley Cup final to face the Montreal Canadiens.

Zezel was born in Toronto and played his junior hockey for the now defunct Marlies at Maple Leaf Gardens. While playing for the Leafs from 1991 to 1994, he scored 50 goals and totalled 128 points in 207 games.

Leafs general manager Brian Burke issued a statement Tuesday evening:

"On behalf of the Maple Leafs, I want to convey our deepest sympathies to Peter's family, friends and former teammates. He was the consummate professional and he always carried himself with great class as a human being. Peter will be greatly missed."

Former teammate and Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni board member Mark Osborne said:

"Peter was the ultimate caring friend and teammate. He was so dedicated to his family and friends and he would always freely give of his time and energies to help someone else. He was truly a passionate and loyal friend both on and off the ice. Our hockey family is devastated."

Zezel was also a talented soccer player and in his teen years had to make a very difficult decision about which sport to pursue. Though hockey was his main focus, he did end up playing some exhibition matches for the Toronto Blizzard of the North American Soccer League and he also played briefly for the North York Rockets in the Canadian Soccer League.

Zezel also appeared in the movie Youngblood, which was released in 1986. He was single and had no children.

I don't know about that...he has shown he can succeed with younger players....I think with the right assistant coaches Quinn could be a very useful head coach.

The professional game is very different from the junior game.

At the pro level you need to be able to implement numerous systems at a situational level. Just look at Babcock & Bylsma, they're always adjusting the way the team plays in-game. Something Quinn has demonstrated time and again that he can't do or comprehend.

At the junior level it's almost all skill development & motivation, the way the NHL was back in the 70's & early 80's when Quinn was relevant.

Saying shit like "hit 'em hard, hit 'em clean, and win the battles on the boards" just doesn't cut it at the pro level anymore.

LEAFS GM BURKE RIPS HEATLEY, AGENTS FOR TRADE REQUEST

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke let it be known that the Leafs will not be in on the Dany Heatley sweepstakes, and he pulled no punches along the way.

In a phone interview with Deb Placey and Billy Jaffe on NHL Live! broadcast on the NHL network, Burke stated that the Leafs had no interest in the two-time 50 goal scorer, largely because of the way he has chosen to handle his trade request.

"We're not going to be in on that," Burke stated. "He's a good player but I have certain guidelines on how players ask for trades."

Despite being only one year into a six-year, $45 million contract extension, the 28-year old Heatley went public with a trade demand last week, claiming he was unhappy with his role on the team and his relationship with Sens head coach Cory Clouston. Heatley, and his agents, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine's actions did not sit well with Burke.

"When you have players come ask you for a trade, I tell the players 'don't finish that sentence,' because once you ask, I'm going to move you," Burke stated. "If a player wants out, you're darn right I'm going to move you. I'm not kissing anyone's ass to play in my town, so to hell with you, don't finish the sentence. My second rule is if I hear about this, you're not going anywhere."

While Burke stated that he has no problem with players requesting a trade, he was unhappy with Heatley's decision to go public with his request, thus making Senators general manager Bryan Murray's chances of moving the sniper extremely difficult.

"For a player to pop off and say he wants out or leak it (to the media), in my mind you are now no longer interested in your team. If you've done that you've handicapped them, you've handcuffed your GM."

While Burke admitted that the Leafs planned to be very active in the off-season and had plenty of money and cap space at their disposal, the 2002 Calder Trophy winner would not be welcome in Toronto under his tenure.

"As long as you are on that team, you owe them to maximize the asset, and once you've taken that step, sorry I don't accept that."
