I watched Silent Hill: Revelation last night. I can say, with no joy at all, that it was truly the worst pile of shit I've seen in ages. The acting was barely passable, and the film itself was totally devoid of any real drama. There was nothing to tie me to any of the characters. It's a shame, because I had a real soft spot in my heart for Silent Hill - I'm not saying it was a great movie (full disclosure: I gave it 6* on IMDB), but the horror tropes that it exploited were the ones that resonate best with me (outside of the thriller genre, of course). The whole macabre, what should be below, hidden is now visible, hell-on-earth sort of thing with the spooky setting is just awesome.
On the other hand, Sinister worked surprisingly well for me. As it carried on, the ending became rather obvious to me - I think the one house to the next aspect should have been dealt with more subtly than it was, as it didn't add any suspense but instead just served to gradually reveal what was to come. Ethan Hawke is just fucknig awesome and that's really all I have to say about that.

Speaking of Ethan Hawke, Before Midnight is amazing, though I didn't expect anything less. |
