That's somewhat true, although I can think of about 10-12 goalies I'd rather have at this point.

easy to say when the guy is pushing 40. If you had a choice of a Brodeur in his prime vs any other goalie in the NHL right now (or in history even) you would be pretty crazy to pick someone else...because he is the best of all time, no question. I say this as the world's biggest Patrick Roy fan too.

Right, that's why I said "at this point." I think he is definitely in the discussion as one of the best goalies of all time without a doubt. I'd also have to throw in Dominik Hasek into that discussion as well. Hasek in his prime was just as good, if not better than Brodeur. His prime just didn't last as long. They have almost identical career GAA, and Hasek has a higher career save percentage. Brodeur played 3-4 more full seasons than Hasek, so wins and shutouts are negligible, especially considering that Hasek played the bulk of his career with Buffalo.

I mean, Hasek had 5 seasons where he finished with a save percentage of over .930. That's unheard of. Brodeur never did in his career.

because Hasek didn't become a starter until his 30's. He was stuck behind Ed Belfour in Chicago. I think Hasek might be top 10 but not top 5. I would say all time in my eyes:

1.Martin Brodeur
2.Patrick Roy.
3.Jacques Plante
4.Terry Sawchuk
5.Glenn Hall
6.Ken Dryden
7.Dom Hasek
8.Tony Esposito
9.Vladislav Tretiak
10.Bernie Parent

obviously imo

you have to remember the teams Brodeur played with. The devils trap system only worked because they had the best last defense in the NHL (brodeur). That system would have worked without him, but not good enough for a cup win.

You have to remember a lot of the Sabres teams Hasek played with too Their appearance in the cup in 99 was due in large part to Hasek alone. I guess I just grew up watching Hasek play, and I just remember being blown away almost every game at some of the saves he made.

hey man, I give full credit to Hasek, and i believe that his unorthodox style diminishes his importance in the eyes of many when it comes to mesuring him against the all time greats. He is viewed as a fluky goalie, and while i see this too, he still managed to win games. He wouldn't have played until the age he did if people did not think he could be a game breaker (although he did overstay his welcome in the nhl, which tarnishes his career a bit in the eyes of many...kind of like michael jordan playing for the wizard...it made no sense and he was past his best before date.)

My top 10 is sort of a mix of guys that won cups, guys that innovated the position, and guys that were just rock solid their whole careers. Had Hasek started more games earlier, he could very well be higher up on my list.

Look at Dryden...i think there are many that were better rounded athletes than he was, but winning 6 cups in a 9 year career is pretty unheard of. The Habs were dominant in the later years, but the first one he won as a rookie was almost 100% because of him. The Habs had a team no one expected to do anything, and they walked into the dance with Dryden standing on his head the whole way.

You could make that case for Brodeur too, though, if he continues his pattern of decline. 2008-2009 he had a bad year, as well as this year. Those may have been flukes, but having a bad year 2 out of the last 3 years is suspicious. That, plus his Olympic performance raises some questions in my mind about if that's still the real Brodeur back there.

i agree.

the thing is when you hold almost every record in the book, people will still let you play even if you are a shadow of yourself.

Do you think he'll call it quits this year if they don't make the playoffs?

would you accept giving up 5 million dollars? Brodeur doesn't need the money, but I can't see him not taking it. Honestly we will see I guess. There is no way the Devils make the dance this year, even if they are probably one of the hotter teams in the nhl. A day late,a buck short imo. It is too bad because they have a good team, a great coach, and would probably do more damage in the post season than any of the other bottom seeds.
