But it's different.
You can have static design (you make it 800 pixels wide no matter what), or you can have fluid design, which fits your screen properly. Of course, if you have a jumbo screen with a 50985x4098509 resolution, navigating the web will feel like eating letters soup as you trawl for words in a sea of blank spaces, empty bits, and everything void. But this is unlikely to be the case, and websites will look moderately better.
This being said, I like Facebook precisely because it's got so many columns that it actually manages to fill them all up... and I wouldn't know what to do with Google+ anyway.
