Hi Goldenscan,
Q. First of all, how are we today and what have you been up to?
We are very, very good thanks. Glad to be back writing and DJ'ing again. I've been away in Bristol and Mark has been sitting around watching Jeremy Kyle probably.
Q. You’ve not been on the scene for a while now, what have you been doing over the past few years?
As you know we've been away for some time. A lot of people don't know that we have been in the music business since the early nineties and we just felt it was time to move away from the studio for a while and gather ourselves a bit. We have both been working on projects away from music since 2005 and it just became obvious that we needed to start producing again so in January we started to build a new studio which was finished last month. And so it starts again...
Q. Goldenscan have released and remixed, what can only be described as, some of the biggest trance tracks ever released. So what do you currently have in the pipeline for our listening pleasure?
We have new mixes of Sunrise coming out in July and two new tracks that are pretty much done. In all honesty we were pretty concerned that we might get back into the studio and "it" wasn't there anymore. We are really happy with our new material though. We think that people who love trance will be very happy.
Q. Where did the name ‘Goldenscan’ come from?
Mark found it outside John Lewis in town just lying around. Seriously now... We were in gatecrasher in '99, Mark asks me "what are those lights" as they were punishing our retinas, I said "they are Goldenscans", we both looked at each other, and that was that.
Q. Goldenscan Halcyon is undoubtedly a true classic, and happens to be a particular favorite of mine, so what was the inspiration behind the track?
Too many late nights in the studio scratching our heads I think. As with all our tunes we never really know how they are going to turn out as we never write to a formula - some work and some don't. You only get to hear the ones that do. Ha Ha
Q. Do you have a preference between DJing and producing?
They both have different elements that we like. I like the solitude of the studio but both of us love clubs - whether we are playing or not.
Q. What is the best/biggest gig you have played to date?
Paris Bercy Stadium to god knows how many people - it was absolutely f**king craz
Q. With you playing the 2003-2005 era at OTR ‘A Journey through Trance’, would you describe this as your golden era and why?
We were so pleased to be given first shout on the era we wanted to play. The best eras for us are 1999-2001, 2003-2005 and the last 2 years - which is another reason why we started to produce again, there are so many good tunes being produced at the moment, the quality is so high. 2003 - 2005 however was when trance producers really got to know their trade in our opinion, the sonic quality of mixes went through the roof. Saying that, we still listen to classic compilations like Gatecrasher Red and Wet, those tunes were so unique.
Q. What was your first experience of Trance?
Gatecrasher '98 - words cannot describe
Q. Being local lads to Sheffield, did Gatecrasher have much of an influence on your career?
100%yes! Say no more.
Now to get to know you a little better off topic:
Q. If you could have dinner with 3 people dead or alive, who would they be?
Could they all be actually dead, that'd be funny and a bit weird. OK then... Berny from "Weekend at Bernies", Dave Lee Roth & Ted Nugent.
Q. Name one piece of equipment you couldn’t live without?
Simple, Apple Mac Pro
Q. What do you guys like to do in your spare time?
Talk about music, boring but true
Q. Last but not least, what can the OTR crowd expect from Goldenscan’s return gig at The Plug?
We really hope that our choice of 2003 - 2005 does justice to everyone who comes along. To sum up: a bit of warmth, a bit more happiness and a lot of of speaker shattering massiveness.
Thanks guys and we look forward to welcoming you to the decks at OTR next Friday, for what is set to be a night of epic proportions!
