As for whether it's worthwhile, it depends on your listening habits, IMO. I tend to only notice it if I'm messing around in Ableton, when individual frequencies start to matter. For casual listening, I think you're right. I can sit and tell the difference, but it's not significant enough to notice without being prompted for an answer.
Throw on, say, Alice in Chains 'Unplugged,' though, and, yes, it's clear as day which is which...on a good enough setup to recreate any kind of soundstage, etc., anyway.
