On two separate occasions I've been given the chill out room all night long and ended up playing for 6ish hours. Weirdly, they were also the two most prestigious gigs I've ever had: John 00 Fleming's album launch in Brighton in 2013 and then The Orb performing U.F.Orb live in Manchester in 2022.

I don't think I ever shared the live recording of the Orb one on TA, so here it is. I actually got some people dancing towards the end, which probably means I failed as a chill out DJ.

Thats pretty cool shit.. Part 2 preferred, especially the river of bass intro... is it because of pee break?

No, it's a continuous mix. I just split the recording there. There's some looong tracks in there (only 55 in 6 hours) so urination time was not a concern.

There's two hours in the middle where basically the room was completely empty because that's when The Orb were on in the main room. In that middle section I was basically stalling for time. Then when people started to come back into my room I picked it up a bit and played a few (slow) beats, which is when I got a few dancers.

Did an 8 hour one at a friend's house party back in 2012. Started with chill, moved into nu-disco, and then played a lot of deep and tech house before going all out with big room EDM.

Link, in case you're interested (right click, save-as)

For the longest sets, I would have to go with DJ Taucher, Because he does these 24 hour streams every Wednesday/Thursday and Saturday/Sundays.

I'm curious...

How did you prep for those sets?
I know you've got quite a knowledgable and discerning taste but was it a case of you knew most of these tracks already... or was it a case of a few musical deep dives?

I'm looking forward to checking them out.

I knew all the tracks already. I love playing chill out rooms because I get to show what I actually listen to in normal life, whether it's 90s atmospheric jungle, Black Sabbath, Ultimae Records or Underworld. The challenge is more selecting tracks that are actually useful in a set and mixable.

I think for this one I spent about £30 on tracks I specifically wanted to play. Then I took everything I had on my harddrive and dumped it in Mixed In Key so I could sort through it live and pick out things that caught my eye. I used to do an ambient radio show and event about 10 years ago so there was a big archive of old stuff to draw on there. There's no way you can plan a six hour set in advance so it was more about having a few practice mixes beforehand with the new purchases, finding a few sequences in advance that flowed nicely, and filling in the gaps on the night with old stuff and panicky last second decisions.

How many tracks do you have in your digital collection?
I imagine it's fairly extensive across the genres.

Oh, I've no idea. Less than you might think, probably, because I've had Spotify since 2011, back when you needed someone to invite you to join, so streaming took over from downloading quite early for me. I think there's about 250gb of music on this laptop, plus 600ish CDs I have in storage I could rip if I ever wanted to.
