Okay, that's a lie. The truth is that I couldn't remotely enumerate all of the costs of their sluggardry, most of which are borne in part or in full by the rest of us in society. |
We need to pay for the treatment of smokers, drinkers, drug users, people who contracted STD's due to their reckless behaviour, speedy drivers, and even of sports people who have injuries that are caused by activities that are far from being necessary for the progress of mankind! These are all diseases/problems caused by choices in lifestyle — and we all have to pay for them.
Jenny smokes (or used to), you like to watch guys banging their heads against one another, and I'm not at all careful with my health. If Jenny has a lung problem, the Canadian citizen foots the bill; if one of your favourite fighters has a brain injury, the American citizen probably needs to pay for his treatment (if I understand the current legislation); and, if I hurt my ankle while I'm working out due to simple irresponsibility because I'm trying to test my limits or because I didn't sleep enough, the Brazilian taxpayer has to literally pay for the consequence of my acts. All these problems could be avoided if we all lived in a bubble and/or were perfectly rational human beings.
Not to mention the people who have innate conditions and pass it on to their offspring, but not after requiring years of medical treatment as well. And old people.
Now, this argument probably only works for Jenny... I don't think you'd be opposed to a world without doctors, specially because it'd be a great way to save money
