I have a 64 gig playbook. Bought it back in August which obviously with the price drop hurts. But oh well. I use it for work primarily for presentations and the bridge function is pretty solid. I can't say I have any complaints with the playbook. Does everything I need to do

BlackBerry is UK's top smartphone - yet again

The latest results from data firm GfK show that BlackBerry® was the #1 selling smartphone in the British market for the second year running. It continues to dominate the market, grabbing 26.3% of December sales and averaging 27.7% through 2011.

The BlackBerry® global subscriber base grew 35% year on year in December to 75 million. The UK customer base is going from strength to strength with over eight and a half million active subscribers by the end of 2011.

BlackBerry® launched its latest operating system, BlackBerry® 7, in August 2011 introducing a portfolio of stylish new smartphones including the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Bold 9790, Torch 9860, Torch 9810, Curve 9380 and Curve 9360.

The update to BlackBerry® 7.1, announced earlier this month, will be rolled out in the coming months. This software update builds on the strengths of BlackBerry 7 to further enhance the mobile experience on BlackBerry®. It includes BlackBerry® Tag, the latest innovation in Near Field Communication (NFC), which allows users to share contacts, photos and files by tapping their devices together. Friends can be added to BBM, contact information exchanged, documents shared as well as multimedia content, all in an instant. Another key feature of 7.1 is that you can now turn your BlackBerry into a mobile hotspot that can be shared by up to 5 Wi-Fi®-enabled devices, including laptops and tablets such as the BlackBerry PlayBook.

PlayBook 2.0 was announced at this year's CES show and will be available in February. The new software will allow customers to stay even more connected and productive in their personal and professional lives. Key features include native email with integrated social network messaging capabilities. Updates from popular social networking sites such as Twitter® and LinkedIn® will all appear in the integrated inbox. It also brings a wealth of apps with thousands more to choose from across gaming and lifestyle to business and productivity including Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Groupon, Thomson Reuters, Zinio and many more.

Torch has being dying a slow death since Europe, I think all beer, salt water, sand, dirty club floors, grass and other various places and trouble my phone got itself into, finally had its vengeance.

Upgraded to the 9900, fuckin' brilliant! Fast, smooth... apps so far are great, ECSTATIC that Pattern Lock was available. Kinda bummed that some of my free apps from December promotions and other paid apps I had didn't move over (screen savers, vlingo, a couple others).

But loving the device so far... SOOO much better to type on. I fly now! With no sore thumbs.

So, do I need to upgrade to the leak to get the hotspot?

And should I even bother, or just stick to the Rogers software and hope for an update?

And in other news...

Why the 9900 over the 9810?

Yeah grab a 7.1 release for hotspot, I think .163 is latest official release if you care for that kind of thing, if not .205 is the newest. I wouldn't wait for a rogers release, could be a very long time lol. I'm running a 7.1 leak on my 9810 and its a decent upgrade.

I've had the Pearl, I had the original Bold 9000, I have the Bold 9700 and I will most likely switch to android some time this year I'm hoping.

I wanna try it out along with the white galaxy s2 if rogers ever gets it that's when I'll switch.

I can't bother to have the same phone AGAIN. I mean design wise... It's honestly too much. I've been stagnant for 4 years of the same design. I actually preferred my original bold over the one I have now, bigger screen, keys etc.

I'd love the 9900 but honestly, it's time to move on with the hopes of RIM coming back in 2013 or 14.

Someone please explain

quote:
Research In Motion’s newly appointed CEO Thorsten Heins said during his first day on the job that hiring a new marketing boss and revamping the company’s marketing strategy was among his first orders of business. If some of us were unsure why finding a new CMO and revamping RIM’s marketing efforts are such a priority, this new campaign should help clear things up. RIM on Monday introduced four new cartoon superheroes who will help the company spread the word about its products. Gogo Girl can save the day with her “brilliant strategy, a smile or a spatula,” Max Stone is “tough, proud and a little wild,” Justin Steele is “always ready to stick up for his friends and Trudy Foreal is “not afraid to call it as she sees it.” We’re not afraid to call it like we see it either, and we sincerely hope this new cartoon superhero campaign dies on the vine. RIM’s super infographic starring The Bold Team follows below.

Meh, the slider grew old on me. I only really got it because the magical keyboard/touchscreen hybrid was still elusive at the time of the 9800 release.

I had the 9000, the 9700 and then to go to the Torch, which was great at the time, it just started to bother me. I never uses the larger screen besides browsing, never used the onscreen keyboard, the keyboard was small and hurt my fingers.

The 9810 was cheaper than the 9900, which was one thing that almost made me go that route (this is only really going to be a interim device till the BB10s come out in Q4). But, just read so many good things about the 9900, nothing but praise from friends for the 9900. And it's essentially what I wanted all along from pre-torch days and the advent of the touch screen with Storm 1. A large, 9000 Bold style device with touch capability. 9900 has it.

And just like Dior Homme said above, I think I just wanted a change... hell, my 9800 was in a 9810 casing for the past 6 months, so besides the processor and OS, it didn't even look different.

Depending on what comes out in Q4 for the BB10 devices, I perhaps may go all touch, if it's as responsive as the PlayBook touch screens, and I currently actually don't mind and not infuriated by using the 9860's touch interface, so could be.

I'm in the same position Dior Homme is in, I have the 9700, bored of it, but I don't know what phone to upgrade to. I don't want an iPhone, but I don't think I can wait a year for the new QNX BlackBerry.

We'll see what happens...

BOOM! Last week's leaked 2012 BlackBerry Roadmap slide deck brought with it a ton of goodies for the new year, but one thing that was missing was a fresh look at a BlackBerry 10 Smartphone Superphone. Consider it found though, with the slide above featuring an image and some details on the much-rumored about BlackBerry "London".

The story here isn't cut and dry though. Back in November a first photo of a BlackBerry London dummy unit hit the internet, but that BBX phone -- it wasn't re-labeled BlackBerry 10 yet -- featured a hardware design that was quite different than the phone in the image above. The first photo of London featured angular edges and a design language more akin to the uber-expensive Porsche Design P'9981 Smartphone by BlackBerry.

By contrast, the BlackBerry London in the image above looks much more like a phonified BlackBerry PlayBook, featuring the rounded corners and all-black look of RIM's first tablet. And while we heard the first photo of London was a legit RIM hardware concept, we've been hearing for an even longer time now that the first QNX-based phone hardware was more like a downsized PlayBook. The plot thickens.

All confusion aside though, our excitement is building for the next-generation of BlackBerry phones that are due out later this year. Word has it that London is actually slated for the UK (go figure), while two other models -- "Laguna" and "Lisbon" are in development for the US market targeting AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. We wouldn't be surprised at all to see Laguna and Lisbon actually launched prior to London. With BlackBerry still the #1 Smartphone in the UK, it's in America that RIM needs to first make a big splash with BlackBerry 10.

Talking hardware for a moment, we're hearing that both TI OMAP5 and Qualcomm chipsets are being tested (1.5GHz dual core processors). If we look ahead by looking at BlackBerry history, it could be that Qualcomm is for the CDMA carriers. All we know is that with the BlackBerry PlayBook rocking and rolling the PlayBook OS at 1Ghz, that with 1.5Ghz as a baseline BlackBerry 10 phones will not be lacking in the performance department.

Keep it locked to CrackBerry. You know we're gonna be Rocking & Rolling This!!

it'll be interesting to see the actual specs...

Design wise, I'm not a fan. Looks kinda like a droid, not unique enough. I'll be waiting till the first BB10 phone with a keyboard rolls out before I upgrade most likely.

The 9810 is doing me well, same specs as the 9900 (more or less) with a bigger screen. Can't really complain.

Anyways...
