And as for causing problems in my everyday life - I don't think it causes any obvious problems, but it's certainly a self-reinforcing symptom of depression, or something like that. |
sounds like you've just been in a heavier beer drinking phase. i go through these from time to time. when i feel like i'm putting back to many cold ones, i shift gears...
get a 4pack of Dogfish head 90 minute IPA (abv 9%) and then when it's time to crack one, use a pint glass, and just sip the beer... allow the beer to mellow, no quaffing the beer.
as you drink more slowly, a few things happen. one, i believe the overall flavor is enhanced as the beer warms up, and two, you might be surprised that you get to a level of "beer buzzed" off of less. it's important to reprogram your mind in thinking you must constantly be chugging beer (like needing to finish a six pack to feel good).
my two cents.

So I think it might be time to put the bottle away for a while...
Starting to think this drinking thing is unhealthy for me. It's really the only addiction I can claim as my own. If I buy a 6 pack of beers, I'll drink the whole thing as soon as I open the first one. It might sit in the fridge for two weeks, but once I open the first brew, I don't sleep until I drink the sixth. If I cook a nice dinner and open a bottle of wine with it, I'll be damned if I don't drink the whole bottle. When it comes to hard alcohol (usually just wild turkey 101) - I try to be more moderate about things and only drink half of a bottle in a night.
I need help.
I should just start doing more drugs and quit the booze. |
Dude, I have to admit I went thru almost the same thing. First off I was depressed but didn't really know it....but alcohol made me feel happy....so I just kept drinking it. And reached a point where I didn't know what a "limit" was anymore. I was drinking for the sole purpose of getting smashed and would only stop when I passed out.
Passing out led to blacking out, which led to a whole mess of a life. I went through "rehab" (i.e. alcohol counseling) and actually stayed really sober for almost 10 months.
But now I know that I can drink and hit a point where I'm feeling good and it's just time to stop.
Everyone is different, and thru the counseling/rehab thing they all say the same thing - and it's never "positive reinforcement". in other words, no one will ever tell you , "hey man, it's OK you have just *one* drink"...because they know (and you know) that one leads to another.
my advice? stay sober for a good couple of months. can people "go back to drinking?" who knows. i know that I have had a few moments that I definitely drank way too much (because I didn't stop because I was feeling way too good). and sure, I regret it...but it hasn't turned into what it was way back in 2008.
look at it this way: being sober won't HURT you. You won't lose anything in life by staying sober. in fact, think of the money you'll save (as long as you don't replace alcohol with something else).

I agree that excessive drinking compared to other type of excess has usually led to problems. As I sit her drinking a rum and limeade and contemplate this fact.
Edit_ I think I really should partake in other favors instead of liquor especially when going out- Im all for getting trashed and drunk at home- its when I go out that shit happens. OK turning the leaf- all about caffeine and etc when I go out, maybe one drink in the beginning of the night- imagine how much money Ill save.
