In China, at the wedding reception, you give a red envelope with cash in it before going in. They count the money in front of you and write it in a ledger. You give according to the level of the relationship, with 600 RMB being the standard for "normal friends" (about 100 usd). Close relationships are expected to give more.

When your wedding comes around they give slightly more than you as to not look cheap. If you are cheap at their wedding you will get snubbed at yours.

The same applies for funerals.

Wacky place. On your birthday you have to take your friends for dinner and pay. The rationale is that they will buy you gifts. You never come out ahead because the notion of a free meal makes them eat like pigs.
