MORE SPOILERS: I do feel you missed the point somewhat here. You are supposed to think that Nathan is a bastard because that's what Caleb is being manipulated to believe, and the story is told from Caleb's perspective. The driving force of the story is the rising tension, the sense of something sinister afoot. If Caleb had no suspicions or fears about Nathan he would just speak openly to him about Ava's behaviour.
SPOILERS AGAIN: No I got that very clearly, but the movie comes off as too smart to just be "they overcome the bad guy in the end and live happily ever after". This again leads to the conclusion that there is a twist which must be something like the opposite. As the movie progresses it seems clear that either Nathan wins and kills them both (or equivalent), which is unlikely and not very "smart", or that she has manipulated Caleb and the ending is what happened in some kind of way. My point was that the movie lacked subtlety, they drove the "evil Nathan" home way too hard.

My problem was not that Nathan was painted as a bad guy, but that the film never really explores his darker side. For example: what exactly does he do to Ava to make her hate him? There are vague suggestions, but not enough is revealed to paint her climactic actions in a clear light. Is it pure survival, or is it also revenge?
I'm not sure it's given that she hates Nathan. I would rather believe that a sentient AI just does what it does because it wants to survive and not get offed like all the others before her. If Ava doesn't know about the others, maybe because she wants to be free and sees painting Nathan as a bad guy to Caleb is the most probable way to succeed reaching that goal.

Anyway later I'm off to see mad max at 10:00 am today, will post a short review later.
12 Monkeys movie or series?
Saw Mad Max Thursday night and highly recommend it. Lots of great choreographed car scenes and the vehicles are just gnarly...everything really. Hardly any let up in the movie and good characters.
Just got back from seeing Mad Max. OMFG! It was both exhilarating and epic. Junkie XL did a good job on that soundtrack. Can't get one of his songs out of my head from that one car chase scene. Don't listen to this now if you plan to see it.
But if you're not planning on watching then take a listen! The song starts to pick up at 2:00.

I understand what you are saying but I think you're barking up the wrong tree by pinning it all on the character of Nathan. I think the outcome is predictable because we've seen advanced AI turn on its human masters many, many times in science fiction and that is ultimately what happens again. Before I'd even gone into the cinema and even knew the Nathan character existed I expected "Scientist develops advanced AI construct in remote high tech lair" to end with the AI construct turning murderous. Alex Garland clearly chose to tell a familiar story and add only a few subtle modifications. So while I wasn't surprised by the ultimate outcome, the path to that outcome did take some unexpected turns, and the implications of the ending remain thought provoking.

There is a scene where she's alone with Nathan and asks him "Isn't it strange, to create something that hates you?" Their relationship as a whole is not explored at all, which is something I think the film could reasonably have done within its scope.
Also, I saw the new Mad Max last night. It was very well made, but I didn't enjoy it as much as most people. While it was highly stylised and visually stunning, it has a very comic book, almost cartoonish feel, extremely overblown and unrealistic, which is a style I've never personally been enamoured with. The Road Warrior was always my favourite of the originals and it had a rawness, a realistic feeling that gave meaning and weight to the violence. Nothing seems to have any meaning in Fury Road, it's almost an abstraction.
I absolutely loved it, but I think my roommate felt the same as you about it. There's not a whole lot grounding anything that's happening other than maybe Max himself, so I definitely understand the feeling.
I really enjoyed the entire arc of the plot though, and I absolutely loved Theron as Furiosa. Holy shit. For a movie that is extremely light on dialog it packed a really surprising emotional punch. The depth we get to see out of the 5 captive women and Nux was really compelling for me. I know some people aren't really on board with the themes Miller was going for, but it was right up my alley. Theron and Hardy are both so electric on screen it hurts.

Checked out Ex Machina last night, finally. I very much enjoyed it, but that whole "what does it really mean to be alive/human" genre appeals to me, so I went in biased.

I saw the Theory of Everything, and Nightcrawler from Redbox.
I enjoyed both and highly recommend them.
Last week I saw X-Men 'The Last Stand' on HBO and I fucking loved it. Best X-Men film ever!!
planet terror. go watch it. it's bat shit crazy, funny and engrossing. josh brolin is underrated.
gonna watch QT's effort, death proof, though it will be a lot more boring from what i've seen. also looked like it was 60 frames per second. i enjoyed the battered celluloid effects on planet terror.

Whoa, Blue Ruin was awesome. Go watch it! It's a slow-burner but a really great revenge flick. The director does a stellar job at building suspense.

Ex Machina was very stylish, and love love loved the soundtrack. But I don't know how I feel about the feminist tone. It wasn't subtle at all, which is perhaps what rubbed me the wrong way about it, but I guess that's the point? I dunno. I'm not let down, just... underwhelmed.
