I should also mention, Dixon and one of the Âme guys did an interview/cover story in the german Groove mag a few months ago and Dixon especially came across like a fucking gigantic egomaniac. They basically talked endlessly about how they are such great naturally talented DJ gods and how every DJ that isn't them sucks and how 99% of DJs are shit (ie. everyone not them or their friends) and how if you don't fill certain arbitrary parameters of theirs, like how many old tracks to play, you've failed your job as a DJ and might as well retire. They also talked about how they are the ones keeping it real and Ibiza is too commercial and yada yada, which is of course complete BS if you look at things like that Addidas campaign. I guess their immense sucess in the last 1-2 years has just become too much and they are dissapearing up their own asshole. |
Not a fan of this camp at all. They are the wannabe rockstars of the deep-house/tech-house world. The party is supposed to be all about them, the crowd is supposed to be in attendance to listen to every track with full attention. Here let's play some droning ketamine-inspired "deep-house" with zero energy and if you are not rhthymically swaying to the music with your eyes closed you are not cool. What-the-fuck-ever-man.
Maybe I'm just too fast-paced and prefer energetic strains of techno and tech-house but I don't "get" the Innervisions sound and I really don't get why people are so obsessed with going out to their parties. Their music isn't fun. I wanna have fun at some point when I go out. It's all about the pretentiousness with them and I say fuck that.
Now the Diynamic camp...so much better. Solomun and the crew know how to play a proper party and get the crowd moving.
Furthermore, I always cringe when I hear some underground house/techno DJ/producer get on the anti-commercialism rhetoric. Yeah, right whatever dude. Who wouldn't want to make a bunch of money and to have your baby (the Innervisions brand and concept) plastered all over the electronic music universe? If you're in the position to do it, of course you do it. Stop trying to come off as cool or genuine or whatever. You can keep your musical integrity and still be successful in a commercial manner.
Sure these guys will all play some small obscure spots with little fanfare but c'mon, the majority of the money they're making comes from big Ibiza nights, festivals, etc. Just look at all the flyers for the Ibiza superclubs. Look at all the branding and commercialism. Everything from Enter to Tini & the Gang to Mobilee to Diynamic, etc. It's all marketing. I don't give a fuck, as long as they play some good music and the parties are going off, that's all I'm concerned with. Just don't pretend you are such an underground DJ whom vilifies commercial music.
