Nah, I think he's just a really fucked up person. I think all the shit he does and says are defense mechanisms. I genuinely do not believe he's a bad person at heart. In terms of free will, isn't all "bad" behaviour just some kind of condition or other? Bad upbringing, chemicals in the head, genetically determined character. If someone spends their whole life deliberately aiming low blows with the aim of making people hurt or upset, their hidden heart of gold becomes a bit irrelevant to me.
