LEAFS GM BURKE RIPS HEATLEY, AGENTS FOR TRADE REQUEST
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke let it be known that the Leafs will not be in on the Dany Heatley sweepstakes, and he pulled no punches along the way.
In a phone interview with Deb Placey and Billy Jaffe on NHL Live! broadcast on the NHL network, Burke stated that the Leafs had no interest in the two-time 50 goal scorer, largely because of the way he has chosen to handle his trade request.
"We're not going to be in on that," Burke stated. "He's a good player but I have certain guidelines on how players ask for trades."
Despite being only one year into a six-year, $45 million contract extension, the 28-year old Heatley went public with a trade demand last week, claiming he was unhappy with his role on the team and his relationship with Sens head coach Cory Clouston. Heatley, and his agents, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine's actions did not sit well with Burke.
"When you have players come ask you for a trade, I tell the players 'don't finish that sentence,' because once you ask, I'm going to move you," Burke stated. "If a player wants out, you're darn right I'm going to move you. I'm not kissing anyone's ass to play in my town, so to hell with you, don't finish the sentence. My second rule is if I hear about this, you're not going anywhere."
While Burke stated that he has no problem with players requesting a trade, he was unhappy with Heatley's decision to go public with his request, thus making Senators general manager Bryan Murray's chances of moving the sniper extremely difficult.
"For a player to pop off and say he wants out or leak it (to the media), in my mind you are now no longer interested in your team. If you've done that you've handicapped them, you've handcuffed your GM."
While Burke admitted that the Leafs planned to be very active in the off-season and had plenty of money and cap space at their disposal, the 2002 Calder Trophy winner would not be welcome in Toronto under his tenure.
"As long as you are on that team, you owe them to maximize the asset, and once you've taken that step, sorry I don't accept that."
So where was these values when Pronger requested the trade from Edmonton and he picked him up?

Its the way it was done that Burke doesn't like. Heatly never went to management to speak with them first about wanting to be traded....either Heatly or his agent just let it leak out to the media.....management had no idea he wanted out.
With Pronger....he went to Oilers Management and told them he wanted out before it leaked.

Not Leafs news, but it involves the only real team that will be wearing a leaf on it's sweater.
Finally Team Canada will have a real coach & can get away from the embarassment that was Pat Quinn's legacy (2002 Gold notwithstanding...Thanks Mario).
Mike Babcock to be named head coach for Team Canada

Burke better do something soon if he wants to move up in the draft. He will definately look like an idiot if he doesn't move up in the draft. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut somethings....it will get him in trouble in Toronto.

I don't think he will be moving anywhere. I would like to see him move up to 4th or 5th so he could get Schenn.
If he really wants Tavares that badly then throw anything and everything at the Islanders. If Burke really thinks Tavares is the guy to build a team around then I would give up Schenn, Kaberle and the first round pick for him. The leafs could then go after a defenceman in the free agent market.

I think he can move up to get Brayden, without too much cost, but the Islanders have said theyre not interested in giving up their pick. Tavares looks outta the reach of the Burke wishlist, and losing that much for him may not be even worth it for the leafs. If Burke doesnt move up, I hope he decides to move down and get more value for 7th round, always seems like a crapshoot past the first five. Who knows tho? Burke has had a record with trading for #1 with other teams before.

BRUINS OFFER KESSEL TO LEAFS FOR KABERLE AND NO. 7 PICK
The Boston Bruins are in pursuit of Tomas Kaberle and a top 10 pick in today's draft.
Sources tell TSN the Bruins have offered restricted free agent forward Phil Kessel to Toronto in exchange for the Leaf defenceman and Toronto's No. 7 pick in the draft.
The Leafs are apparently canvassing the league to see if there are any better offers out there.
Kessel, taken fifth overall by the Bruins in 2006, scored 36 goals and 60 points last season, his third campaign in the NHL. With restricted free agent David Krejci signed to a long-term deal and the team pushed up against next year's salary cap, general manager Peter Chiarelli was rumoured to be shopping the young scorer.
Kaberle completed his 10th season with the Maple Leafs in 2008-09 and has two years left on his contract worth $4.25 million a season. While he has a no-trade clause, Kaberle's contract allows him to be dealt during a small window in the offseason that opens with the commencement of the draft tonight.
ummm...wtf?! did they not get the message that JFJ isn't GM anymore?

I hope Burke doesn't make that deal......seems to steep for Kessel. Maybe Kaberle and a late second round pick for him but that's it.
