Alright so my promised review.
Got there around 11:30 with some friends and a fairly quiet guestlist line. The mainroom was looking busy already by this time as M&S were already working the room with their signature opening sound. Around 12:05 tINI took over. I know a lot of people are going to be hard on her but I think it could have been worse. I've seen many opening acts try to 'set the tone' by either playing 10 BPM's faster than the headliner or just play peak time tracks for 60 minutes which take away the flavor of the night. Having a set of the sort of filler she played last night set a good mood for Digweed who can pretty much go in any of 2 zillion directions from when she finished. Not a bad move to have her open for him, however, MO did the best opening I ever saw him do in the main room when he opened for Digweed last year. Just a side note .
Around 1:35, we were informed that we would be able to hang out in the back VIP booth infront of the right speaker. I have to say, it was incredibly nice of the guy who had the VIP booth in the back right speaker to let us dance in his booth. If that guys reading this, you saved the night. It was also amazing timing as Digweed was clapping his hands in approval of tINI and was preparing his first track. I can't remember anything really standing out the first 30 minutes of the set but I'm pretty sure around 2:10 there was a moment that all the lights went out in the joint and there was just a pulsing sound with a haunted ambient sound in the back. That was one of the most epic moments I ever experienced in the mainroom. There was nothing but that sound, everyone going bonkers and the reflection of the mixer/CDJ's on Digweed's face. I remember Barry (DJ Ampz) and I talking about how they should have just kept the lights off for the rest of the night at that point. Oh how one can dream!
My best memory of the set is from around 2:40-4. This was when I felt he was really pushing the crowd into the bedrock sound and mixed it up with some tracks which I'm sure are on Drumcode (or could pass for it). Great times this was. I have to be honest, I can't remember much from 4-5. I felt he let his foot off the peddle a little bit but also it could have been that the previous hour had been a bit too relentless and he needed to calm the crowd off.
Overall, I give it about a 8.5/10. There is simply no DJ on earth that has his gift of mixing. A lot of people are going to say it was not as good as last year but it was simply a different set. Last year was much more linear and straight to the point where as last night was a showcase of just how versitile he can be. When it comes to track ID's, I did look through the Cordoba samples as well as his beatport chart and I did notice quite a few tunes played. I'll try to post them later on tonight/tommorow.
Great to see Navid, Barry, Del, Ben, Chris, Liam, Shaya, Nada, Robbie, Kris, Oz and very nice to meet Peter (Infinity HIGH). You guys are all awesome and I'm sure there won't be many more nights like this that we will all be in the same place so these nights are all the more special because of that.
P.S. How awesome was the sound in Guv once Digweed got on? Can anyone explain how suddenly the whole system evened out with no muffling? *points at the users who work at guv*
P.S.S. As I mentioned in the other thread, it was a pleasant surprise to hear James Holden-The Wheel being played. However, the track after that was track of the night. A multi-layered progressive bombshell! Please ID if possible.
P.S.S.S. Sorry to anyone I saw and didn't mention. I love all a ya's!
