thanks for taking the time to check that stuff out guys, glad you noticed the taking it up a notch thing, living out in San Diego now and sober from weed and alcohol for 3 months now (went to rehab for 3 weeks in July). i do take a little adderall from time to time when i work on music but cutting the weed and alcohol totally out of my life has made my music way better and allowed me to actually finish stuff, it seems like.

uhh the reverb, Ableton reverb and MannyM Reverb from Waves, been loving that reverb a lot lately.

Im only posting this here cos im sure she wont see it - i wouldn't want to offend her with my opinions

I piad her upfront as well (im a noob at working with vocalists). From now on im recording all my own singers too

Whats your honest opinions guys??

Cheers

I have worked with vocalists in the past and find even the best singers you still have to do masses of work to in order to deliver a finished coherent outcome that adds up to something memorable. Hers are pretty good as a foundation for you to work with. Start by making a chorus line out of the vocal, probably add pitch shifted elements to get some sort of memorable angle.

It's very hit and miss with vocals, but at least she has a good voice so you can deffo do something here.

As they are it's a bit non descript like someone just jamming away, this is where the skill of the producer really comes in.

Cheers Richard

its hard to be a producer (fully) if there in another city!

im emailed her and she just hasnt spent much time on it - thats the problem really. She is a good singer (does it for a living)

Chorus has to be totally re done but i quite like the verse ideas

On the one hand there's a performance in there that's working. I wouldn't worry too much about the tuning issues either as they're easily ironed out and unless you're sitting there in the studio doing comps you're going to have to tidy things up a little.

I'm not sold on the processing. It's a fairly metallic reverb/delay combo you have going there, and probably too much of it. I also feel you could EQ the vocal a little better. Can you post the dry vocal to listen to?

Vocals are tricky to get right, but I think it's worth persevering.

I like what you've done so far, but I think some tweaks would be beneficial.

I think that main lead is a little monotonous right now and could use some modulation, filter work etc. The hats and percussion feel a little confined and mooshed together, like it's just a couple of loops stacked on top of each other. I do it all the time but i'm trying to get out of the habit and start creating hats from scratch for ultimate control.

I also think the sub is a little too overpowering and perhaps the mid highs are a little too prominent overall.

Nice oldskool vibe though, which I always approve of

This is something I'm toying with on the Mac.

I may have posted a version of this before, but I'm just fiddling with the balance a little to get an ear on these K271's I'm using. Oddly I've got the K701's as well and although I swear they're better and more detailed I seem to be getting better results on the 271's. Weird.

Anyhoo, just tweaking levels etc before I pull this out into a full track.

Cheers mate

Just to be clear though this is the demo exactly as I received it back - with her vocals and some rough processing (not done by me) stuck on top - I don't have the raw vocals. I gave her some feedback on what I wanted and she's been really cool about it. The chorus at the least, is getting scrapped and re done. Ive got a copy of mellodyne just figured best to get the performance as on point as poss first!

Bro, revisit that psy wip you posted before. You don't need any further confirmation. Just analyze it well, you hit the jackpot there. That mix was just spot on from every angle.

But always remember that mixing on headphones is a bit tricky, not for the low end as many could actually imagine, but especially for pads and other elements presenting a consistent amount of layers.

Cheers for the comments man :-)

This is very early so going to change a lot of it really, agree on everything you've said , hats & lead are fairly boring at this stage, going to go back to the drawing board on it ! Will try and get the percs sounds nice as they dont really fit at the moment as you say! nice one
