To be more specific, I've been living in apartment/condo style buildings all my life, which generally adds a bit of security at the expense of not being able to turn things up loud.
In a house, you have the ability to crank things like crazy, but you have less in the way of security. I would be kind of worried about my gear walking off one day.
Renters can get Renters Insurance. It's relative cheap < $200 for a year of coverage. It covers thief and fire. I still worry about my gear but I breath a little easier knowing I don't lose all my investment in case of tragedy.

i would be MUCH more worried about my records than about my gear, cause even if I got some cash from the insurance company, many records are irreplacable...
Damn I guess I never really thought about my gear gettin jacked, and I live in a college town so thats a def possibility. But I figure if someones gonna break into my crib, my turntables are going to be the last things on their mind cause if they're breakin in, know something the police dont But the theft insurance sounds like a good idea.... but until then, any of you jackasses try to steal my shit I'm gonna hunt your asses down.

AND ONE MORE FOR STYLE...
That is...
2x technics 1210 m5g
2x shure sc35c carts
1x behringer vmx-300 mixer
1x sennheiser silver hd-280 headphones
2x Acoustic Research 100w passive monitors
3x unknown brand/model 2.5' high speakers with low, mid and highs @ around 150w-200w each.
1x old Panasonic amp/receiver from 198?
plus about 50 or so records in another milk-crate off to the side. I went and bought the measured and cut tabletop particle board wood and just put it on top of a bunch of well placed milk-crates.
It's seriously such a pleasure to spin vinyl to vinyl now... omg it's incredibly orgasmic.
