The countdown begins...Decknanigans 2.0 is 5 days away and the forecast is looking FINE!
25C AND SUNNY ALL DAY, say it with me now...
Just hot enough to soak up the sweet, sweet sol, cool enough to dance the day away...
Here's the scoop on the talent for 2.0...
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Windsor expat Chris Formagin is a die-hard vinyl enthusiast who grew up on the sounds of Detroit soul, funk, rock, and jazz - all of which can be expected to make an appearance in one guise or another in what promises to be a diverse and deep-crated opening set at Decknanigans. Chris is the founder of Vinyl Preservation Society, which boasts members in Toronto, Vancouver, Windsor, Detroit and Oakland, and which aims to sustain both the historical and playable aspects of our favourite medium.
3:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Originally from Portugal, where he was influenced by local heavyweights Jesus Del Campo and DJ Vibe, Leandro Menezes, a.k.a. DJ Kostt, will be playing out for the first time since taking up the craft just over a year ago. Launching his foray into the art of the ones and twos at WestsideWax DJ School, Leandro has long since branched off to put together his own unique blend of Techno and Progressive beats - come out to support this budding turntable maestro!
4:45 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. From newcomer to one of our oldschoolers, Brian Globus will be dragging a choice crate of classic Tech-Step and Deep Drum and Bass out of storage and into the Decknanigans DJ booth for some late afternoon brucking out, seen? Jazzy, low-end riddims to excite and deelite as day segues to dusk!
6:30 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. We happened upon trovador Mario Muņoz while walking through Kensington Market one sunny mid-week afternoon. He was stationed with his guitar, a mic and a small amp at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Baldwin - we passed and quickly found ourselved turning back to absorb the soulful acoustic ballad he was laying out as if there were an audience of 100 in front of him. We like that kind of passion in our music, and we're sure you will too - not to be missed!
7:15 p.m. - 9 p.m. Our man Giordan Battaglin is an all-round party maven - promoting, photographing T.O. nightlife as Psomatic Imaging and aurally blowing minds at nightclubs and late-nighters as e.k.g. His true-to-the-roots, highly-textured minimal techno sets, played masterfully as a digital DJ/PA hybrid, are consistently ahead of the curve in the Toronto dance music scene - you need to come see what all the fuss is about!
9 p.m. - 11 p.m. Yours truly will be closing out the night with a set of Ancient Hits and Future Classics. Expect everything from Chicago Jack to Acid and back, original Electro, funked out Detroit Techno, vintage Freestyle, (bounce that) Booty, Discofied edits and anything else you can think of that makes ya move, all laid out on 100% black crack, baby!
Last bits and bites...
- A reminder that all of our talent for the day are donating their time and energy to this cause, and we hope that you are able to do the same - please donate generously to Sukritham Home! (info on how to donate if you can't make it out may be found in the post above)
- As with D 1.0, our front door won't be open. You'll need to go through the back alley to get to Decknanigans - please message me if you don't already have the map! If you have trouble negotiating steep stairs, we can make arrangements to let you in the front - just let us know.
Once again, we're looking forward to a luxurious day of lazy rays, fantastic company, tasty fixins and hours upon hours of some of Toronto's finest underground talent - consider yourself notified! See you Saturday - and if we don't, then wherever you are and whatever you're doing, have an amazingly long long weekend!
