Yeah, that episode was a good one. Can't wait to find out more about Gus's background... |
Well, the "Internet" seems to think it may have something do with this...
quote: | The Chicago Boys were a group of young Chilean economists most of whom trained at the University of Chicago or at its affiliate in the economics department at the Catholic University of Chile. The training was the result of a "Chile Project" organized in the 1950s by the US State Department and funded by the Ford Foundation.
During this time the CIA often used the Ford Foundation in recruiting non-communist intellectuals who were encouraged to attack the Marxist and communist left.
On 9/11/1973, Pinochet led a coup d'état which overthrew the socialist government. Under the influence of the Chicago Boys the new government also implemented economic reforms, including the privatization of several state-controlled industries. Washington "saw it as an equal partnership between the army and the economists".
A document released by the CIA in 2000, titled "CIA Activities in Chile", revealed that the CIA actively supported the military junta after the overthrow of Allende and that it made many of Pinochet's officers into paid contacts of the CIA or U.S. military, even though some were known to be involved in human rights abuses.
In the mid 1980’s Pinochet encountered international pressure to step down and allow democratic elections. In 1987 he legalized political parties and stepped down in 1990.
During the late 1980’s Pinochet began to funnel money out of the country. In particular Riggs Bank of Washington D.C. - Riggs participated in money laundering for Pinochet, setting up offshore shell corporations (referring to Pinochet as only "a former public official"), and hiding his accounts from regulatory agencies. Riggs also had extensive ties to the CIA, including several bank officials that held security clearances.
The first record found by investigators is of an account opened at the Miami subsidiary in 1985 under the name Jose Ramon Ugarte. Pinochet was also at the center of the illegal arms trade, receiving money through various offshores and front companies, including the Banco Coutts International in Miami.
Gustavo –
In S4E08 Gustavo tells Don Eladio he just handles business operations. Max describes Gustavo as a brilliant business man. This would indicate that Gustavo is an economist at heart. Perhaps he is one of the original Chicago Boys. It would make sense that Pinochet would look to a person like him to help move funds out of Chile. This would explain how Gus received the funding to start Los Pollos Hermanos and why it’s a subsidiary of Madrigal. Since Pinochet was also involved in the illegal arms trade it would make sense he would need someone like Gus to help manage sales and transfer money. And likely the Cartel was one of their customers. That would explain why the Cartel knew who he was even though he didn’t know them personally. It would also explain why they allowed him to live. |

And as for last week's episode... WOAH!
This show just keeps on getting better and better... love the character development on Gus. Been rooting for Jesse lately too. Walt is kinda getting on my nerves, just get on with it already, seems like he is the only one being a bitch about everything now.
