Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I had been meaning to watch this movie for quite some time and at last, I got around to it after smoking a bit of grass. It was quite the trip despite only being high. I can't imagine the spectacle it would become after dropping acid or something else of equal strength.

Really? Beyond the arcade appeal it was pretty simplistic good guy who plays by the rules vs bad guy who cheats and still wins out pandering imo. I'd be curious to hear how far the real story split from the one they portrayed, because it seemed way too set up for film to be real, even though it was sold as a doc.

What are your thoughts on this movie? It looks like it could be an epic masterpiece or boring as shit. Personally, I love Terrance Malick's style of making movies visually powerful. The Thin Red Line was great, but I thought he tried too hard with The New World which almost put me to sleep.

This movie is described pretty vaguely: "A story about a family with 3 boys in the 1950's, where the oldest son witnesses the loss of innocence." Malick's been working on the screenplay for this for over 30 years so it better be good!!

Having been between semesters as of late, I've found myself indulging and watching movie after movie. I haven't been watching anything current (though I'd really like to see True Grit as soon as possible) so this list will encompass recent finds and one or two old favorites revisited.

I highly recommend all of the following. I'll start with the ones that had the greatest impact on me.

1. Unagi (The Eel)- Winner of the Cannes Palm d'Or in 1997. Previously, I hadn't even heard of this film. I watched it late one night and it instantly struck me as quintessentially Japanese. I generally find movies of that sort to be very enjoyable- watching them often feels voyeuristic, almost, as though you were peering through the window of a neighbor who you know only as a friendly acquaintance. Unagi resonated with me in a way that few Japanese movies (few movies, in fact) are able to. Themes of jealousy, rage, remorse, guilt, and eventually redemption are universal ones. Hope doesn't always have wings, and love isn't always manifested in passion or lust. I woke up early the next morning for no reason at all and couldn't help but watch it again.

2. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring - Another foreign film, this one Korean, with universal appeal. Beautiful, elegantly simple, yet so complex. I haven't yet given this one a second go, but it hasn't left the back of my mind. Initially, I found myself guarded to the movies sentiment- Buddhist themes permeate the film, and I saw them as a barrier to my full enjoyment thereof. To the contrary, they served as a gentle accent.

3. Cronos - I'm on the edge about this one still. An older film by del Toro with Ron Perlman. I was hooked from the opening story, and though the movie faltered at times and seemed awkwardly paced, I would recommend it.

4. The White Ribbon- A moral landscape set in a small Protestant village in Germany, 1914. 2009 Palm d'Or winner at Cannes and Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film as well. I've found that almost everything Haneke directs is fantastic.

5. The Shining- An all time favorite of mine, and the perfect movie to watch while stuck home late at night in the midst of a snow storm.

6. Seven Samurai- Another old favorite revisited. If you haven't seen this yet please do. That's all.

DO NOT WATCH MEET THE FEEBLES. or do, i mean i dont care.

i swear to god i got duped into watching it while stoned and it was like the whole time.

the only reason i watched it was because peter jackson directed it and had a hand in writing it. Man, he's a little fucked up.. haha...

Every time I watch Meet The Feebles, I think of you. I mean, I've only seen it once, a very long time ago, but it's totally going to be my thing every time I watch it.
