I was assuming this was a hypothetical situation where they were privy to your ability. If you make a mistake on your resume or cover letter, you better be really special for me to overlook that because that isn't so much a lack of knowledge as it is a lack of caring about details. Most people have some idea of how they write and if you know you suck, you get someone to proof read it.
I've put some thought into why my writing say on a message board is often atrocious yet i am able to write rather well in an academic or formal setting. I think that i approach writing much differently depending on the situation. The nature of my work in many ways involves a process where you try to spit out your thoughts and then edit them afterwords. I think this translates to writing. I just don't do the editing part. I mean you see edits but they are usually things I add, not correct. It is pretty hard for me to just write properly without having to go back and structure things and edit the mistakes. I think you need to practice writing to be able to do that well. But language has always been that one thing I have to work at. It isn't something that will just improve from reading. I read alot. So i can recognize bad writing and that is usually the process i would apply after the fact. But ya, i would never be able to write anything that was not a mess without having to go back and edit. I think this is more a indication of how your mind operates. I know mine is very non linear which is great for creativity but not so great for other things.
