Thing is if Balsilie did buy the Maple Leafs he would have to file for bankruptcy, he barely has any more left since RIM tanked.
I wonder if Alex Shnaider wouldn't mind forking over the money. True, it be more expensive than owning a Formula One team (he use to own one years ago).

I disagree about Ottawa. That hockey market is unstable at best and there are always empty seats and plenty of tickets for sale. The running joke in Montreal is that everyone sees the Senators the most because of how close it is, and how easy to get and cheap the tickets are compared to here.
An NHL team isn't exactly always there to turn a huge profit. The successful model in almost every good market is an owner who owns the venue, and uses sports teams as tenants. This is in the hope to break even or make a small profit, cover operating costs, and clean up on non sports bookings like concerts and such. Its no secret that many of the struggling NHL teams are leasers in barns that don't belong to them. Sports teams, even if unprofitable, always lend more weight to a venue as an appropriate concert venue. I think that the NHL should only hand out franchises to owners that can own their barn...it will never happen, but that is the ticket to the most profitable NHL imo.
Kansas City is making a case for a team like this...they boast the highest hockey ratings of any American city without a team, and consistently crack the top 10 in overall american ratings for national games. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the next franchise, or possibly Vegas. Bettman has wanted this forever. Quebec's plan's are too up in the air via venue issues to be considered front runners just yet.
Too many owners spoil the broth...just look at Edmonton back when they were a consortium of 30 owners. Nothing got done. The Leafs are too much of a cash cow to not be swooped up by a media giant. It will be a company with multi access media platform that purchases them for sure to use as content. I'd bet the farm on it.

Kansas City is definitely the front runner for any relocation. The problem the NHL has right now is too many owners wanting out and not enough viable new owners wanting in.

Did you hear about the guy who wants to bring the Whalers back? He says if the city ponies up 130 million to renovate, he will try and buy the team. I guess he never bothered with the fact that everyone in Hartford is a Bruins or Rangers fan, and that was the case even when they existed.
I've also heard Seattle mentioned, but I have no clue if those over caffeinated douches like hockey

LOL @ Hartford.
As if the north east Atlantic coast doesn't have enough teams already.
Vegas might be interesting. Lots of people looking for things to do with disposable income. That, and Canadians love Vegas. Might be a decent market. I'd still like to see a team in Quebec City.

I'd love to see the Nordiques back too, but not by building a venue with public money and essentially letting Quebecor make huge profits with none of the risk. If Peladeau wants the team that bad, he should fund it from thr ground up...100% private. They can afford it, i don't want to pay taxes towards that.

those damn rich insurance guys....god I hate them
There has been talk about Hartford for years now. Last I heard the Connecticut Whale are doing quite well and that is a big reason why they think Hartford can handle an NHL team again.
Vegas will never happen because of gambling issues...that's why you don't see any of the big four leagues in Vegas.

team in Hamilton could also destabilize Buffalo, I thought I read somewhere. Kansas will get a team (back) and maybe it will take off like Colorado did the second time, especially if the on-ice product has similar success.
Salary cap def helps, though raaching the floor can be an issue too. But the cap and more parity and revenue sharing certainly helps these teams along than before.
Seattle may work too. There's no longer an NBA team as well, so more disposable income for some, assuming they can get into hockey too.
Leafs on bit of a slide now

Hockey will be playing catch up to soccer in Kansas City and Seattle... And has Kansas City and Seattle ever been known as hockey town?

It doesn't matter if they are hockey towns....all that matters is they are some of the top television markets in the states. Seattle is number 14 and Kansas City is 31.
