It's because the piano riff is actually dictating what the bass notes should be playing, the bass follows it nicely except for that third bar of the progression.

Richard, just in case I'm hearing things and the progression isn't starting on C here's what I mean in number values, first and second bar play root note, third bar plays 5 half steps below root note, fourth bar plays 4 half steps below root note.

Richard - couple thoughts

i really think the inclusion of male vocals is hurting you

it sounds very 'over-produced' (I would know I'm a major offender of this) all I mean is that nothing feels like it has room to breathe. Musically I think it has a lot of potential but, I don't really know how to explain it but it feels like the mix is made out of cardboard. I know that's probably useless advice so I don't expect you to take it seriously

The chord progression is fine. First listen I could hear what madmuso was talking about but second time it sounded more natural, might throw off the audience though in a live situation

Really nice track you have there Richard. It sounds great on headphones and has improved from the last version you posted. I think it sounds fine as it is now imo.

Well done

Much valued feedback lads, I will look at the bass again as I still don't get what a couple of you are saying about the bass playing an off note.
My idea for this and other dnb tracks to come is to present a bassline which goes where people do not expect, I enjoy the tension this creates, but perhaps I've fucked it here and cannot see the woods for the trees.

Meriter I value your honest feedback there but alas I think I'm probably not going to be able to alter the mix now, I've already spent what feels like a lifetime on this. I have to say my home mastering chain is probably part of the issue but hopefully decent mastering might give it a warmer more rounded sound (but I realise the mix is still the critical determinant). My vocals are what they are, and I hate working with other singers as it's a pain for me personally.
I agree it is somewhat over produced, this has been a learning curve for me. It has changed what I will do on my next dnb track in that I wont seek to over cook and 'awesomize' every last sound becauser this can lead to a wall of sound over cooked zizzle fest. I ought to know this by now, but I'm probably the slowest learner of anyone on this forum.

My next dnb track should sound more pleasing as I'm taking real care not to overdo everything and I am keeping each fader nice and low.

Will also make the vocals less repetitive, less synthetic.

this has the potential to be a nice track, some things i noticed

kick - bit too loud on the midrange side of things
bass - not sure on this, very midrangey and the mid gets masked by other elements later on in the track anyways, so u cant hear it
breakdown - not sure it really needs to be that long?

I really like this. Prog breaks are my holy grail, and the rhythm in this track has the rest of it nailed down, even though you didn't let us hear that much of it. the rest is spaced out and floats nicely. Proper tune!

Arrangement is hard.

it needs an entire new mix, and some of the processing is overmidded and harsh bitcrushed for the track title. Also 2 years ago i refused to dial kicks down, i can agree it needs to sit back a bit and resonate more. Thanks for listening!

I think it sounds great, just one thing I noticed; after the break it goes nowhere, you need to make it go somewhere after the break then I'd consider it finished. Add a new chord extension/variation there or something.
