Damn, some really good music in here! Worked on this a bit last week, not sure if it will get finished.
I like the bassline in the end more then the rest, puts the emphasis on the clap.
Here's something of me, been a while since I made something.

No need for more bass on such type of track. It would add too much heaviness, and that's completely the opposite of my goal. I'd suggest you checking out some early 2000 moogwai tracks as "underground subway" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZkXGw3ag7s
It hardly has any low end.
First of all - respect for having that goal, im realising myself that a lot of my older tracks had too much sub/bass
But in comparison to the track you posted, yours still sounds a bit bass light to my own ears, the youtube track sounds a bit fuller in the bass area
its a tricky area to get right - arguably the trickiest of them all

I noticed that. Unfortunately that's common for 90% of the people posting here. Too bass heavy, especially the kick which overpowers the mix even at low volume.

You're tricked by the higher rms in moogwai's track. It is 8db higher in volume than mine. This is quite a big difference. His bass is less dynamic so of course it'd tends to appear fuller.
But the reality is, that track is mid-bass characterized.

why is it 8db higher than yours though? Music does need to have a certain loudness to sound pleasing imo...and im not talking about squashing it to death with limiters

Not a whole lot going on yet. I think the kick could use more sub, it needs a snare or clap and more elements. The lead melody could be more compelling too I think. Overall what is there is pretty well mixed to me and I think you can build around the bass and lead.

this is nearly finished now - bass needs more variation and some attention i think but i changed it from the bright fm bass i had before
any more thoughts mix wise, etc
thanks
Chris
Really like where you going with it man, nice and smooth vibe with clean and well defined melodic aspect - really cool.
As for any suggestion - try to add some mid layer bass line to support your low freq one, it would give you more dynamic character to your overall sound - my $0.02
Cheers mate,
Darek

Interesting style man - try to spice up a bit 1:04 moment - expected to hear more dynamic impact in this part (or after) or at lease add some additional component to progressively solidify your groove.
Me like it !
