Hello! Any Genelec 8020 or 8030 owners here?

So, since moving to a bigger house with a smaller studio space, I’ve determined that my Yamaha HS80Ms and HS10W are way overkill for my room and have decided to go with a smaller Genelec 2.1 system. The room is about 11x12x9 ft (1,188 ft^3, 33.6 m^3). Based on that size, Genelec’s recommendation is the 8010s or 8020s with the 7040 sub.

The thing is, there will be times when I want to run just the monitors without the sub (e.g., late at night when the family is asleep). So I’ve ruled out the 8010s altogether and I’m left wondering if the 8030s with the larger 7050 sub might be better than the 8020s/7040, or is that overkill for my small room? I generally mix at relatively low and reasonable levels, only cranking it up temporarily in the final mixing stages. Any recommendations from experienced users? Price is no consideration.

Any reason for specifically switching to Genelec?

I still have a pair of HS7s here as a secondary monitor to my Dynaudio Core 47s and honestly.....could just use the HS7's most of the time. The Core's are technically and objectively better in every possible respect, but translation and results are what really matter.

If you're used to HS80s, perhaps a pair of HS7s will do, or alternatively the little Neumann KH120 (or whatever the current equivalent is) are very, VERY good for the money. Very good bass response for their size.

I've always found Genelecs to be relatively poor value for money.

I actually already ordered the 8020s with the 7040 sub! One of the 8020s arrived yesterday, the others will arrive next week, for some dumb reason, but oh well. My new studio space is so much smaller that the Yamahas were just too big and I don't feel like they're accurate at all at low volumes, especially in my smaller space. They just sound muddy at low volumes, and fatiguing at moderate levels because they're right in my face (not to mention consuming most of my desk space).

I read a lot of reviews, listened to all the comparisons, etc., and the Genelecs just really seemed to be a perfect fit for my needs in my small office/studio. Most of the stuff I'm doing right now (well, attempting to do when I can find time) is less club-oriented and more chillout, plus some video/voiceover work, so I mostly want something with detail in a small package and the Genelecs keep ticking all the right boxes, so I think I'll be happy with them.

I'll post some pics of my much more modest setup in the studio thread when I get everything set up next week. Thanks for the input, guys!

Yeah, I plan on doing that when they arrive next week. The manual is a bit confusing, but I'm sure a little trial and error will get it dialed in.

My boy is 14 now, so he's long past that stage! 14!!! Isn't that crazy!

Exactly $2K USD with tax and shipping for the two monitors and sub.

I got the latest 8020Ds, which don't have the DSP room correction. I looked at those (8330s, I think), but decided on the 8020s instead.

Yes for the sound you get it is a little expensive but you pay a little extra for the rugged and cool design, aluminum cast enclosure, and the fact that they are industry standards always cost a little more than the up and coming competition. you pay for proven technology. the closest competition imo is the focal CMS series but they have a lot of quality issues with the amps, loose/noisy bassports and the lack of protection circuitry (and grills...) etc. so yes expensive but quality.

The value for money comment was just about the cost of Genelecs vs the alternatives. I have a £4k pair of Dynaudio Core 47s so I'm not averse to spending money on good monitors, but Dynuadio quality is up there with anything. Genelecs are more expensive than comparable quality alternatives in most places in the world.

I bought the 8030b's(i think) a while ago and wasn't wholly impressed by them. Subjectively, I just didn't care for the sound.

I have the same Yamaha's and whenever I produce on them they are too flattering so I end up not adding enough stuff the the production because it already sounds good. They are too harsh for my taste and I've heard several other's same the same thing.

I don't know if I'd describe them as harsh to my ears, but they definitely do have a flattering sound to them. I'd rather that they sound a bit more flat and accurate.

In other news, my sub finally arrived last Friday and I hooked it up, only to hear a nasty distorted farty sound coming out of them. Either the amp or the driver is blown, so a replacement is on the way. In the meantime, I've been using my Yamaha sub and it definitely makes the system sound more whole, The replacement Genelec sub should be here tomorrow...

If money is no objective you might want to check out "The One" line from Genelec.

Get this, you can monitor with them from .4m away and you can have it turned down really low and still hear good detail.

I'm going to have to test this out to see if this is legit, but the line is suppose to be a big step up from previous installments. I mean, you can just see how the design is radically different.

Genelec's when scientifically tested are extremely accurate and with your sub you would have a really solid system.

Sort by score and you'll see a bunch of genelec's on top.

8020as worked perfectly for me. had them paired with two mackie mr7 and two eventide (?) 5 inchers that i ran thru a cheap behringer mod matrix ffor leveling the monitors independently. super aweseomee to just hit a green switch for night mode, and also it had a hard button for collapsing to mono for mastering etc. purposes.
