Superchargers use mechanical energy from the engine to drive the forced aspiration, which means it requires the engine to exhaust some horsepower to drive the compressor. A turbocharger uses the exhaust system to power the compressor.
A turbo is more efficient for the gain in HP because it uses potential energy that would normally be wasted to power the compression, but it suffers from some drawbacks, mainly responsiveness.
