Re: Re: Re: ...
So, Eric, where does the "Vivid" bit comes from? Who are these Vividettes you talk about?

That's the perfect way to describe this film! I hated the main character and loved the film. Just because it was different and actually fun, I'm getting tired of knowing the next camera angle in every film and being able to tell the ending by the opening shot. I hope more films start taking more bold changes in their style. While this film was no where near one of the greatest films in my opinion, it was one of the first actually enjoyable films in a really long time. |
I just watched the first minutes of Juno, so unlike David, I can't compare both characters.
The thing is, by the end of the film, I wanted to smack Scott Pilgrim in the back of his head along with all the whole Sex Bob-Ombs gang and Ramona. Oh, specially Ramona. There's just one breakout character that entertained me throughout the story and whose development amused me. If I could, I'd keep the same plot, the same everything, and instead of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World", I'd call it "Knives Chau gets the self-respect she deserves" for snapping out of her puppy love with a whiner that is nothing short of a wanker. She's not pretty, I give you that. She's not the most popular girl in school, that's probably also true. And she's a geek, which is far from being a problem. But in such an empty universe like Scott Pilgrim's, an adorkable character like Knives is bound to have much more charisma than the girl Scuntt keeps chasing after. And that makes all the tension in the film pretty much meaningless. Why fight 7 deadly exes when the fun girl is trying to get you back? Lamona is clearly not worth the trouble.
It's incredible: Everyone - EVERY-GOD-DAMNED-ONE but Knives! - tried just too frigging hard to be cool and the only way they managed to do it is by showing contempt to everything in the universe that wasn't made for a 8-bit console. I'm under the impression that whenever Scott Pilgrim farts his butt-cheeks say "Whatevrrrr" or something like that. Ramona is so lethargic she probably gets comas instead of periods once a month. Meanwhile, Knives was genuinely interested in the stuff she likes and isn't afraid to show her appreciation for videogames, Sex-Bob-Ombastic music and even calculus (yet another stereotype in the plot). Even her name oozes awesomeness! Yet every other character slags her off or knocks S****ty for dating her. The best lines all came from her: So what if he's 22 and she's 17? So what if she's dating outside "her race"? But, finally, in the last minute she comes to the obvious conclusion that was painfully clear to the rest of us: she's too cool for him. He's GOT to be with someone as mediocre and perpetually aloof as Ramona.
Or Kim. Or his sister. At least in this case the shock value would make the plot a wee bit more interesting. Plus, she was well fit, so it'd be a clear case of wincest and it'd render the eye-candy fest epically complete.
