I didn't know but the reason some countries just outside Europe can take part is because they are member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), this is where the name is from, so only Australia is the really strange one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Broadcasting_Union
What I don't understand is why the hell it is allowed not only to hire foreign songwriters, but also foreign singers. That's beyond stupid IMO.
