I guess it depends on the kind of scares one likes. I found the atmosphere was super tense and creepy, the film definitely did not need cheap thrills to get the ole psyche stirring. Not for me anyway. Even though I'm not religious I've always found horror movies with religious themes the most unnerving.
I couldn't agree more with anything you just said.

Just finished 10 Cloverfield Lane. It built nicely, but then went all "meh" on me.

"Criminal" with Kevin Costner was nice if your not in a too serious action mood.
"Midnight Special" was a bit slow, but an okay SF.

Going to try to fit in Hail Caesar and Green Room this week if I can. Recently watched Barton Fink on the recommendation of a coworker...I may never be the same again.

Queen of Earth, whoa. The most psychologicalally unsettling film I've seen in quite some time. Top notch performances from the cast, especially Elisabeth Moss. Really great music, too. Tense. Very tense.

I rented Mad Max Fury Road. I had avoided it because I didn't think I wanted to see a rehash but I was happily surprised. I'm glad they didn't try to replicate the other movies, bring back Mel or find someone to act like him. While it was a surprise Max plays such a minor role.
The plot was quite simple but I didn't mind it because it was well done and played to the movie's strength as a pure action movie. I'd rather a movie excel at one thing than to try to be all things to all people. I also liked the subtlety of characters not being either good or bad and their ability to change.
As a side note the original movie happened to be playing on tv. I forgot how awful the audio was. I never knew until now they dubbed the movie with American accents. Thanks to the internet I was able look up the the Aussie version. That reminds the new Max accent didn't sound right. You would think with so little dialog he could have done a better job.

Watched "Green Room". It was a pretty good thriller. Also watched "Everybody Wants Some!!" this week. It's good fun, but doesn't hold up as well as "Dazed and Confused," IMHO. No one can seem to truly remake "American Graffiti," try as they might. But, I love movies like that, so they are welcome to keep trying.
